Summary
King Aerys’ reign starts terribly - he is forced to claim the Iron Throne after the Great Spring Sickness takes the lives of his father and nephews. He is neither a warrior nor a politician, and so he has little interest in ruling over the Seven Kingdoms. He spends his days poring over heavy tomes filled with records of the olden days, of dragons and visions of ruin.
When he hears about a powerful seer dwelling in Oldtown, he summons her to court.
(In which a modern character tries to survive in Westeros and her knowledge of the books
causes some troublecomes in handy.) -

Daeron hums, but his gaze skips over the food, landing on the carafe filled with dark red wine. He fills two cups, pushing one in her direction. Matarys takes it without much thought, bitterness spreading on her tongue as she tastes the beverage. It’s light and fresh, perfect for a hot spring night. She says as much to Daeron.
“As long as it puts me to sleep, it doesn’t matter how it tastes, sweet cousin,” he is already pouring himself a second glass, his neck glistening with sweat.

Arnelle Baratheon’s first year as her son’s regent is going horribly - her household is in constant chaos, the other Marcher Lords think they can order her around and the nearby sept just got robbed, possibly by the Dornish. What’s worse, Maegor Targaryen, the hand of the king himself, flies south on Balerion when he hears of the impending conflict. Daeron drank all he could after the hedge knight left, in hopes that, when night came—for he had learned it always must—he dreamt of nothing but calmness and the swift sound of the nearby river he had been told the name of but forgotten. Maybe in my dream I'll remember. Maybe in my dream it'll be a name as sweet as song. He emptied his cup and poured himself another, thinking hope could taste better than Arbor gold.
