Pressing his face against the smooth fabric of his pillow, he shut his eyes and directed his thoughts away; away from the bruising hands, towards the football field, to Akira’s arm slung over his shoulder while they loitered around the school grounds, or the shopping district, or the woods that separated their neighbourhoods; whatever it took to keep them from going home for a few more hours. Whatever it took to keep his mind elsewhere until it was over and he was let go, left to crumble into the bedsheets again, breathing heavy and burning and raw.
The door clicked shut. He was alone again.
