Maya paused. She tried to remind herself that it was okay to want things, even if she wasn't ready for them. That it was healthy to have goals, something to look forward to and work towards. But Maya was also afraid of saying the wrong thing and scaring off Carina.
"I miss being Captain. I think that, despite everything else, I was a good one. I did what I needed to do."
"But…?"

"Maya…" Her wife's name rode on a tired and drawn out sigh, even as her wife looked up and offered her a slightly sheepish smile.
"I know, I know you want your space. I just wanted to make sure that you're okay. You didn't answer me earlier."
"I couldn't."
They both knew what she meant. Admitting that she was not okay would not have done Carina any good. But, in a way, she was admitting it now. Even if only Maya could tell. Even if only Maya knew the truth, because her eyes were betraying her.
Damn those eyes.

But as her gaze returned to the table where they both sat, Maya's heart sank as the other woman leaned in dangerously close to whisper something in Carina's ear.

Pushing back from the bar counter a little too abruptly, the legs of the stool scraped against the floor, drawing attention from the other patrons to Maya's brisk exit.

Maya tried to rearrange the furniture, a careful game of Tetris against herself. Maybe if the sofa was moved over there, then maybe — No, no, it had to be here. Carina liked it here. But maybe that was all the more reason to move the pieces of furniture around more, like maybe some feng shui would help make things click into place in her jumbled mess of a brain.
Maybe then she would have all the answers. Maybe then she could cancel her appointment with Dr. Lewis. Maybe then Maya would win this long game.
She had to win.

But Carina's Italian accent was still very prominent, for obvious reasons: she'd only been living in this country for a little over 24 hours.

Now it went back to only being Maya's apartment. Carina was finally giving her the space that she so desired. But Maya wasn't so sure that she wanted it anymore:

Gigi could see the inner conflict playing out across the Latina's expression, her eyes hardened by the tightness in her chest. Dani's heart was racing as Gigi's other hand moved to clasp loosely around her wrist, feeling her pulse to remind herself that they were both present. To ground herself. To feel something, after what felt like days and days of feeling nothing.

Tempting Emily to say something, to take it all back and admit that there actually was something between them, even if it was stubbornly scratching beneath the surface. That the lingering glances on the jet and secret smiles delivered whenever the other woman saw her enter a room weren't all in her head.
