Elphaba isn’t superstitious; she doesn’t believe in magic or ghosts or the supernatural; she has always been wary of organized religion; she’s never understood the people who believe in fate. Some might say it’s cynical. But Elphaba just doesn’t get it - she likes logic and reason and believes that everything can be explained.
So the thump in her chest at the voice is confusing to her. The sudden sense that the world has shifted on its axis is confusing.

“Not all of Oz,” Glinda said. Something like shame flickered across Elphaba’s green face. “Water, Elphaba, really?”
“You know the rumors. Apparently I’m so wicked water can melt me.”
“Well, I can agree that you’re wicked, but the rest of the sentiment is ridiculous.”Ten years after the melting, Glinda gets a visitor whom she is less than pleased (and unsurprised) to see.
