Elphaba was the person Galinda could come to in order to feel safe, and the last thing she wanted was for her stupid friends to ruin that.
Galinda and Elphaba have been dating for a few weeks since Galinda was paid to have sex with her, but Galinda has yet to meet Elphaba's friends. Somehow, it keeps getting pushed off, but it can't wait any longer, and Elphaba is worried that they will be disrespectful towards her new girlfriend on account of her job.

The guard, to his credit, became extremely interested in a perfectly ordinary patch of wall just over the secure door’s frame. Sound travelled more than you’d think in this part of the Palace, and thus he had long ago perfected the art of hearing everything and reacting to nothing. Ever. At all.
