In August 2024, a team of Parks Canada divers recovered a desk from the captain’s cabin of HMS Terror. The documents contained therein were, of course, badly waterlogged. New technologies have allowed us to recover their contents through minimally invasive scans. These revealed heretofore unknown details of the fate of the expedition prior to the abandonment of the ships in the spring of 1848. But it also revealed a surprising, more personal story. The following is an attempt at recovering this story from the documents.
