Montreal was a chokehold; Ilya is the fresh air.
After the world finds out the truth about their relationship, Shane is a ghost in his own locker room, hunted by the teammates who once called him brother. He’s spent his career being the Golden Boy, the Captain—but the cost of the crown has become unbreathable.
Ilya already gave up his throne, his career, and his glory in Boston just to be within driving distance of Shane. He’s already done the hard part. Now, as the city of Montreal turns its back on him, it’s finally Shane’s turn to choose between the game that made him a legend and the man who makes him a human.

Summary
Shane never really got over how Montreal treated him that last season and he was having major trouble fitting into the the new team in Ottawa. He ends up doing what he did best, controlling aspects of his life that he could, mostly his difficult relationship with food. Ilya didn’t know how to help and the tension from home was brought to the rink. A blow out between them in the locker room after a crucial loss caused Shane to walk out into the night, and could not come back for a long time.
Someone from Ilya’s past Ilya decided torturing Shane was the best revenge to get back at Ilya. Happpy ending, but it will take a while to get there. -

Summary
“You know, there are a lot of kids that look up to you—“
It’s the refrain of Shane’s life. Everything circles back to this: a lot of kids looking up to you. That’s why you need to spend your summers doing ad campaigns. That’s why you need to let a social media manager handle your every interaction online. That’s why we need to sit here after family dinner with flash cards rehearsing the different ways you’ll answer reporters’ questions after you face Boston next week, and, oh, when we’re done, let’s do some French vocabulary flashcards, too, because it’s important to the Francophone fans that you’re thinking about them. There are lots of Asian Francophones in Quebec, Shane. Almost 13% of primary schoolers are of Asian descent, compared to less than 4% of hockey players. Isn’t that pathetic?
As if Shane doesn’t know that it’s pathetic. As if Shane doesn’t know what he fought through to get here.
Abruptly, Shane is furious.

Summary
Ilya watched his husband’s eyes search the ice and land on where Ilya was still slowly getting to his feet. Shane’s eyes lit up in that special way they only did when looking at Ilya. But his eyebrows quickly drew together with worry as he took in Ilya’s tired posture, quickly moving over to him.
“Are you okay? That was a rough hit.”
“Not as rough as what you are getting tonight after that sexy goal,” Ilya drawled in Russian.
He enjoyed watching a flush spread across Shane’s cheeks. It was the same one that he had peppered with kisses after their morning blowjobs several hours earlier.
“Ne na rabote,” Not at work, Shane scolded through his teeth, but the slight curve of his lips and heated stare let Ilya know his teasing had worked.Or: Ilya and Shane navigate their public reception post-coming out. Shane struggles with anxiety and his diet, and Ilya tries to protect him from the world.
