Summary
She nearly jumped out of her skin as the barista with the striking brown eyes put a hand on her shoulder, a paper cup nestled in her other hand as she smiled down at her. Historia noted with intrigue the amount of freckles spread across the barista's cheeks, face, and arms. It seemed almost haphazard, the way an artist would speckle paint over his painting as a final touch, a final act of care in chaos.
What got her attention more than the freckles, though, was the apron hung loosely around the barista's shoulders. With the knot undone, it was a clear indicator of closing time rearing its head.
“You doing alright there, blondie?”
In which Ymir is a barista, Historia is suffering, and Ymir has a wedding she desperately needs a date for.

Historia is truly and utterly haunted. She can pretend she’s not. She can pretend that words of life and pride don’t echo in her head, so loud it hurts. Can pretend that every once in a while when she sees Eren from behind, she doesn't feel a weight hit her chest. She can pretend, so she does. Day in and day out. To be a good friend, good person, good queen.
With so much practice, Historia has become quite good at pretending. So she can pretend for just a little while longer that she isn’t the worst girl in the world.

And—as if that wasn't already shitty enough—Eren admits to secretly harboring a crush on her twin brother, Armin, from afar.

"Historia didn’t know how many months it’d been since the initial outbreak, but life was flourishing in whatever cracks it could find through the proverbial concrete. She still went to class, still shopped (stole, but whatever) for groceries, still fed the stray cat she’d adopted, and still had her cooking and cleaning duties as one fifth of her apartment’s residents.
All things considered, it was quite weird to have two of your top worries for the day being to “wash all the dishes in the sink and—oh, yeah also don’t get eaten by zombies, haha,” but such was the life they led now. There was little to do about it but to move forward."
In which even the literal apocalypse doesn't stop the flow of time and the stubborn human spirit to survive. For those still alive, schools start again. Cafes open up. Baseball events are actively being planned at this very moment, since everyone's gotten good at swinging at bat by now. Historia, Mikasa, and Sasha keep going to college and worrying about exams and senior thesis papers. Ymir, Annie, and Armin work at Hange Zoë's prestigious lab, researching a potential vaccine for the virus. It's terrifying and hysterical all at once.
