Cloud just wants to paint.
After finally escaping the tumultuous life of a for-hire mercenary, Cloud Strife is making his best attempt at setting the slate clean by earning a living as a full-time painter. After striking a deal with Barret Wallace, a former client and manager of Avalanche Properties, Cloud is able to put up the money for three months of rent for a small studio apartment; meaning Cloud has three months to sell another painting before facing eviction.
In his desperate search for inspiration his gaze lands on his new neighbor, Zack Fair. In between striking up odd jobs, earning peanuts at auctions and direct sales, Cloud decides Zack is his perfect candidate for a portrait. Cloud must fight with his own ego in attempt to pursue Zack as his subject, however, and- in the process- discover what his model truly means to him.

"In what felt like an eternity in anticipatory bliss came along a sobering realization of what exactly was going on– Cloud was able to understand the objectivity of it, but soon came the way he felt about what was going on. Cloud knew Zack had a girl somewhere in Sector Five, and though his work in the SOLDIER program often kept him from visiting her, Zack still referred to her as ‘his’. Cloud did have respect for that– he could partially relate in the way he felt about Tifa, though she wasn’t really his girl. But, if he felt so similarly: what was he doing in this man’s bed?
Why didn’t he just go home?"
In his drunken haze, all Cloud knows for sure is he went to Wall Market with Zack for a night out. But as he reawakens in Zack's car, he knows something isn't right: what the hell happened at the bar?
