The room is too bright.
It’s quaint, in a nauseating sort of way. Polished floors glint from the gleaming honeycomb chandeliers overhead, make him squint. A few vases sprinkled here and there, filling the room with a sickeningly sweet scent – even a waffle-cone headrest framing the silken sheets of a neatly-tucked bed. Outside, the golden sun gleams, the gentle rays of light spilling past curtains that waver in the afternoon breeze.
It's meant to be beautiful. Luxurious. Welcoming.
With one sweep of his cane, Shadow Milk tears it apart.

It’s too late. He knows this, feels it in the bones that protect his heart.
Ratio turns, and Aventurine can already see the beads of sweat at his temple. He can already see the way Ratio’s skin is turning pale and sallow before his very eyes.
Of course, of course, of course. There was never any other way this could go.
When Ratio gets injured, Aventurine makes his peace with losing the doctor.

Ah, damn. Tomo’s unfiltered thoughts slip past the barrier of his lips before he can get a grip on himself. It’s late to take it back or to add awkward explanations that would justify what he’s uttered. Because Kazuha has heard him indeed, his jaw dropping in surprise.
What should he do now? He means it, yes. Kazuha is the best view on this mountain— prettier than the light show, the snowy peaks, and the verdant trees of the forest alike. Seeing him in this special atmosphere, when the world ceases to exist and it’s only the two of them, entertained by the wonders of nature, makes his heart thump unevenly in his chest.{ Tomo, used to spending his summers up in the mountains with his grandfather, believes it will be just like any other year. What he can't imagine, though, is that he will meet a merman dwelling in a pond in the woods— and how can this not change his life completely?}
