A bronze hand slides from out of frame to wrap with lazed possession around Cloud’s throat. There’s the faintest chuckle as Cloud responsively lifts his head.
Zack says, “Think I’m more than that.”
Cloud asks Zack to help him film a video. To his confusion, Zack’s more than willing.

Kagome blinks. “What?” she demands.
Inuyasha growls then, golden eyes glaring at the ceiling like it personally offended him. “I’ll pay you, for fuck’s sake,” he grits out. Kagome can’t help but feel like she’s entered some new reality. Douchebag extraordinaire who eats all her chips is now begging for her to be his fake girlfriend? And he’s going to pay her for it?
Kagome opens her mouth and says the first thing she thinks of. She’s not proud of it. “You realize you have to be nice to a girlfriend, right? Or is that why you’re still single?”
Kagome and Inuyasha aren't exactly friends. Friend-adjacent, at best. And yet, when Inuyasha's mother comes to town, he comes to her with a proposition. Date him, get paid. It does not go as planned.

“Oh, deprived? Big word, dumbass,” Cloud deadpans, crooking a brow at him. He is utterly unmoved by the welcoming arrangement of pillows and blankets collected around Zack, or the snack stash basket in Zack’s lap. “Not falling for it.”
“Cloud.” Zack sits up with a very serious look. “Would I ever lie to you?”
“Absolutely,” Cloud answers without a second thought

Well. Now he's cuddling his crush regularly, and slowly going insane.

If this were a different story, Zack thinks, he would be using his last moments to remember kind, green eyes and a sweet smile. He would be staring out into the raining sky, life running out of him, while making peace with the fact that he would never see his first love again. If this were a different story, Zack would not be left empty-handed, crying out as his friend stumbles away into the remnants of a battlefield. He would not be praying for that blond head to turn, aching to capture the final sight of a cherished face before locking it behind two lids.
No, this does not feel like a fitting end to this story at all―and Zack overflows with the one childish thought that this is unbearably unfair. In the rare moments that he, as any soldier must, contemplated his death, he never imagined that he would die alone.
