"Well, I can't have anyone thinking my resolve has crumbled," says John, as if this is perfectly logical. It's only for Vin's sake that he's offering an attempt at an explanation. Elis will always acquiesce to John, even when John is being unreasonable. It's largely how they've remained friends for so long.

When their captain has a night of insurmountable insomnia, Alex dims the lights in the bridge by precisely 23%: a number that Greg will appreciate but not comment on. Life, for Alex, is a game of endless rebalancing, always observing and adjusting to keep the SS Taskmaster in a state of efficient, effective equilibrium.
This does mean that, sometimes, he could be accused of going slightly too far.

The new and pungent smell of his aftershave—a birthday gift—all of his sixteen-year-old bravado marinated in it, leaving a trail like a damn skunk. Everything covered by the smell of beer, of alcohol reeking from his mouth.
That was new, too. It clogged her senses. It was, she thought mournfully, the smell of a man.
It all came in a package, it seemed: long limbs, deeper voice, bigger arms, hands, sharper jaw. He was taller than her now, curling around her, enveloping her completely.
A man.
Not that his brain seemed to recognize it, hiding in his big sister's room, as he did before when he was a child and had a nightmare.
