Every day, Mav makes an effort to find Jake and invite him over, and every day Jake finds a way to say no. He gets home exhausted, locks the front door, and when he gets to bed, the apartment makes weird noises. Jake gets into the habit of double checking the locks every night, firmly shutting the doors and windows over and over again. He thinks he’s going crazy. Maybe he actually is crazy at this point.

Fabian hisses in pain when Riz presses a gauze pad against a particularly nasty cut on his side. “I think we all wish that. What was Aguefort thinking?”
“That he could get a bunch of kids out here to handle this instead of doing it himself, I imagine,” Adaine answers. “You sure you’re okay, Riz? Kristen’s right, you took way more hits than normal.”
There’s lots of words on the tip of his tongue. I’m fine, of course, but they didn’t believe it the first two times and he doubts they will the third. And, more bitter than he intends, Yes, no thanks to Fabian. Except that’s not fair, because he’s supposed to be able to dodge and hide and do his job without help, and Fabian was just keeping the people in the front safe. So Riz shouldn’t need bardic inspiration; not today, not ever.

"Someone entirely unsuitable, who could honestly be quite an oblivious, pompous ass sometimes," said Adaine, folding her arms across her chest.
Riz laughed, attempting to cover the sound with a cough. Fabian narrowed his eyes at Riz. He wasn't as good of a detective as Riz, but he was quite well-versed by now in the particular minutia of Riz's expressions.
"You know who she had the crush on," said Fabian.
Fabian figures things out, and then he doesn't. Riz and Adaine don't figure things out, and then they do.

“That’s the most excited I think anyone’s ever sounded saying the words ‘optimized agenda’.”
“That’s because I am excited.” And it was true. He could feel himself buzzing with anxious energy, which was kind of ironic considering how hesitant he’d been about the whole idea at first. The thought of having Riz’s support along the way just made the growth journey concept that much more manageable. “Promise me you’ll help me the whole way?”
“Promise.” Riz held out his hand, and Fabian shook it.
“Fuck yeah.” Fabian rubbed his hands together. “What’s the plan?”

Torse spends some time reconstructing Zern and then reunites with the crew after Maxwell requests it. It is, funnily enough, through Ludmila that he finds the ability to understand his own issues and reservations. There is some dancing and sparring involved.
