    “Come here,” Steve grunts.

    Bucky gets up off the bed, but he’s only taken one step when Steve clicks his tongue. When he looks at him, confused, Steve’s lips curl up into a smirk.

    “On your knees, sweetheart,” he rumbles.

    Steve’s voice, low and rough, gets to him, and Bucky feels like his strings have been cut as he immediately falls down to his knees, hitting the mercifully soft carpet.

    “Good boy,” Steve murmurs, “god, you’re gonna be a treat, huh?”

    Steve thinks Bucky is a sex worker. He sees no reason to correct Steve if it means he gets ruined by someone who looks and acts like Bucky's filthiest dreams.

    James takes a bolt of white light to the chest. He goes down and doesn’t get back up.

    A few minutes later, Steve finds a teenage boy passed out in black armor two sizes too big for him.

    The world’s most notorious wetwork operative is now a sixteen-year-old from the 30s. James was living with Steve, so the boy—who goes by Bucky and looks at Steve with mingled awe and wariness—is determined to be Steve’s responsibility. Natasha looks sympathetic but not enough to save him from his fate. Tony and Strange are bickering over how much of it is magic and how much is science.

    Sam tries to console him.

    “It’s temporary,” he murmurs, fingers locked tight around Steve’s wrist. “It’ll be fine, Steve.”

    Steve believes him.

    That’s a mistake. The first of many.
