“Mike, stop. I have a boyfriend,” Will whispered. But he didn’t pull away. He stayed—staring at Mike’s mouth, wanting, aching. His tongue darted out to wet his lips, unconsciously mirroring Mike’s touch.
“That’s not what I asked.” Mike leaned in until their lips ghosted—barely touching, electric. His hands braced on the wall on either side of Will’s head. “Do you still love me?”

“Why do I—” Mike splutters. “Because I care, Will! I care about you.”
Honestly — what was Mike expecting? That the past month didn’t happen? That they aren’t being weird again? The end of a literal apocalypse did more harm to their friendship than good, apparently, and it’s not something either of them can ignore.

He knows, it’s all his fault. He knows. But there are tears stinging in his eyes and he calls Will again, because how the hell is he supposed to figure this out on his own? He calls again, and again, and again, and again, until Will picks up.
“Mike. Let it go. It’s almost morning, you should sleep. Why can’t you do as I ask and not call me?”
Mike swallows, voice coming out as a pathetic croak, “Will. Will, I can’t lose you. I can't-” The tears that have been burning in his eyes impatiently, finally roll down his cheeks in fat, slow, drops.

Will needs time away from Mike, time to focus on college and time to get over his unrequited feelings. For the first time, Mike is not the one to push Will away and he cannot stand the feeling. “Because I wouldn’t just…” Will cuts himself off before he can finish and looks down at his plate instead, the unsaid words resting bitter on his tongue. I wouldn’t just leave with no explanation. Not like you did.
----------After everything they've been through, it is Mike who rips off the final band-aid of their friendship. Years pass of Will pretending like he never thinks about Mike at all. Years pass of him forging his own life and finally letting go.
But when a young boy shows up at Will's apartment, it becomes clear that he'll never fully be done with Mike Wheeler.
