    Summary

Don and Ian go out for dinner. Trouble finds them - again. And Ian's really getting tired of hostage situations.
    - - -
Don can tell Ian’s holding back on saying that his reflexes are better. If Don’s honest, he’d also give the point to Ian. “Average grade? Should I feel insulted that you gave that encounter an average grade?”

“I’m giving myself an average grade,” says Ian. “You’d get a little below average and a ‘see me after class’ note.”

    Summary

The consequences of unleashing Ian on Buck Winters. Why use brute force when a psychological scalpel will do?
Set in 3x01 Spree/3x02 Two Daughters.
    - - -
“You don’t know me,” Buck repeats, numbly. Adrenaline’s wearing off. He’s shaky and trembling like he’s coming down off a high. He is, actually. Brain chemicals are still chemicals. It’s how people get hooked on thrill-seeking. Good thing most of them pick skydiving or rollercoasters, not murder.

I answer easily, crossing my arms and facing him. “I know why you eat frozen burritos.”

    Buck’s mouth opens. “What?”

    Here we go.

    Summary

While stuck on a particularly dull manhunt, Ian has a chance encounter with a stranger who may be in harm's way.
    - - -
Ian respectfully looks away, too, and pretends to be perusing the crosswords and word searches. He recognizes the typical puzzle book brands. They’re all too easy. Once upon a time, they held his interest for a little while, but not long enough. Ian’s worst curse is mind-numbing boredom, and it’s so hard to avoid. He needs engagement with live prey to stay occupied.

Ian glances back towards the woman, objectively evaluating, summing up the parts and pieces with sympathy. Ian does feel things, just not the way other people do. He doesn’t take on the pain of others. Still, he’s aware of it, and he hates to see it happen to innocent people. It ignites the cold vengeful fury in him that’s always simmering under the surface, like a stove waiting for a match.

    Summary

Ian and Don have a long after-hours chat, ranging from cooking and criminal-catching to prehistoric humanity.
    - - -
"That’s why we let them stick to their fancy math while we stick to the people. It’s a win-win situation.” Then as an afterthought, Don adds, “and that would be the more appropriate scenario for your hunter-gatherer caveman analogy.” He grins.

“Can’t you just picture Charlie in a sabertooth tiger pelt doing math on the cave wall with a piece of prehistoric chalk? Grug invent calculus. We feast tonight.” Ian laughs to himself, turning his attention back to Don, who looks intrigued but cautious. “He can keep busy with that while you and I are out in the woods.”

    Summary

Ian Has Some Thoughts. Don's lucky enough to benefit from his brain-unpacking skills.
    - - -
“I don’t make errors. At least, not deliberately.” Ian smiles crookedly. “I do my job right as a sniper, there’s no harm to anyone else. Not even a broken door. Window, at most.” He pauses. “You know how much it costs to fix a house after a SWAT raid? You know how many people can’t afford that?” He watches the question catch Don off guard, and keeps pushing. “You know, we all live in that zone of case-closing tunnel vision. You ever think about the risk-reward ratio to everybody else? The people who have to live with our decisions? You got Charlie and his math. Maybe I should ask him.”

“Careful,” warns Don, raising his eyebrows. “I’m gonna listen to you, and I might even agree, but that’s not the kind of shit the Bureau wants to hear.”

“I know. That’s why I’m saying it to here, to you.”

    Summary

Nikki convinces the men of the IHOF (International House Of Feds) that "man-dates" are now a thing, then dares Ian to make the most of it.
In typical Edgerton fashion, he gives it a shot.
    - - -
“Yeah, why not?” Don puts his paperwork aside. It’s a good reason to ditch out of the office and keep avoiding all of the responsibilities weighing on him. Not his own actual responsibilities -- he’s good about those -- but the extra shit that keeps getting dropped on his desk by anybody who doesn’t want to pull their weight and is counting on the Eppes work ethic to pick up the slack. He’s sick and tired of it, actually, but hasn’t vented about it, because he’s not the guy that does that kind of thing. Ian is looking like a very welcoming alternative right now. “Where we going?”

“Nice spot out by the ocean,” says Ian.

“Oh, yeah,” says Nikki. “It’s where all the hardened criminals go surfing.”

    Summary

Larry has a lot to unpack. Ian's only just beginning to try. It's easier to talk when it's just them, the desert night sky, and an unspecified number of coyotes.
    - - -
It’s a while before the chatter resumes. The night is calm and still and so very silent, and it’s a relief for both of them not to be forced to carry on a conversation. When Larry tunes in again, grounding his consciousness from adventures in the cosmos, Ian’s quietly voicing a complaint about the TV coverage of his ordeal. “They issued a correction to clear my name, but too little, too late.” He pauses, seemingly wondering if Larry’s paying any attention at all. “Hope no one googles me before going out with me.”

Larry picks up on the wrong aspect of that sentence. “You know, the term googol originated from--” He notices the look on Ian’s face. “What?”

    Summary

Ian and Larry try to figure each other out after hours, with mixed results. (that description sounds so much worse than this actually is, lmao)
    - - -
Larry faces the bar mirror, sitting with his chin in his hands. “I have to admit, despite my pacifist nature, I find myself compelled by the efficiently violent workings of your mind.”

“There’s a little of that impulse in everybody,” says Ian, chuckling. “Comes down to how you manage it.”

Larry suddenly feels more than a bit outclassed. “I don’t think I could do any of that.”

“And I couldn’t teach physics,” points out Ian. “Closest I ever get to a telescope is surveillance.”

    Summary

Ian and Nikki go to a gay bar and chat about life, love, and manhunting.
    - - -
“Fascinating,” says Nikki, and she really means it. “Getting inside their heads to track ‘em?”

“Yup. But you gotta be careful with that, or you start to sympathize with them. I don’t,” adds Ian, “and that’s what makes me the best.” He shrugs. “You know, most of the time with criminals, there’s no disorder at all. Just the good old story of someone taking a wrong turn, and they can’t get back.” He grins suddenly, but there’s no joy in his eyes. “But those aren’t the kinds of cases they call me in for.”
