“Pup,” his general chokes out from blood stained lips, straining to be heard over the roaring din of battle around them, “I know you could never shoot me, pup. You're too much a’ your father’s boy, you are. I know you don’t mean it, now.”
His muzzled face smooths out after the statement, something in the Jedi’s presence easing as he lays back into packed blood-red dirt, perhaps accepting of his fate. Perhaps he sees something in his son’s eyes. Perhaps he senses the truth of the statement in his all-knowing Force.

Summary
It doesn’t take long for him to notice a problem in their settling in, however: Ellie doesn’t socialize with the other kids. At all.
She sticks right by him whenever she gets the chance. She looks at the kids the same way someone would look at zoo animals, but she never tries to approach. When one of them gets bold enough to actually try to talk to her, she doesn’t move from her place right at his side. The kid will try to talk for a few minutes, but it’s a rare teenager who wants to talk to another teenager right in front of an adult, and they slip away soon enough.
Ellie always watches them go with something like wary interest in her eyes, but she never tries to go after them, only pressing tighter to his side.
(Ellie struggles a bit with making friends when they're back in Jackson) (Joel tries and fails not to worry about it)

Summary
The first time she comes barreling into the house like the devil’s on her heels, he’s on his feet with his gun in hand at once, stepping between her and the door, sure an intruder is about to burst through after her. He readies himself for a fight, already planning how to get an attacker out of the house and away from Ellie.
And then he hears her laughing.
He turns to see her, panting and sweaty, laid out on the floor like she’s a rug, her face practically glowing with the force of her smile. She lifts both hands to the air in fists and cheers.
“What are you doing,” he asks, but the question comes out flat in light of his confusion. He gives the door one more look, but no intruder is imminent, and he holsters his gun, going to one knee beside Ellie, still on her back, breathing hard.
“I beat it!” She says, clearly proud about whatever the hell she’s talking about.
“Beat what?” He asks.
“Curfew!” She nearly crows.
He blinks.
It’s possible they’ve had a misunderstanding about what exactly a curfew is.
(some sweet settling in together fluff with just a smidge of feels for flavor)

Summary
After creating a cure, Joel and Ellie discover what their new life in Jackson is going to look like.

The picture was a little off-center, more of the museum building visible behind them than the potato statue itself, but the two of them were perfectly clear, the sunlight making Ellie’s face almost glow. By appearances alone, no one who looked at them would think them family. But the ease with which they held each other, the complete softness on his face and the joy on Ellie’s, spoke a speech he could never have put into words.
Joel never thought he’d get to have this again. He was sure Ellie never thought she’d have anything like this. But they’d found each other, and saved each other, and survived together despite all the odds. Joel wasn’t a good man and still sometimes thought he didn’t deserve this, didn’t deserve her. But she’d chosen him, and it would have been the cruelest thing he’d ever done—in a life of doing cruel things—to not choose her right back.
