To say that Inazuma’s Mission is a disaster is putting it lightly. What happened in Inazuma is unequivocally a clusterfuck with a capital C, a shit storm of epic proportions not unlike the one raised by Osial himself during the Liyue Mission, which, coincidentally, also tanked the Fatui’s reputation. Dear Archons, it tanked the Fatui’s reputation so hard and so fast that Pulcinella will be lucky if he can manage to dredge up its shattered remains from the depths of the Earth in which it now lays.
Luckily, Pulcinella has a Plan to fix things, and it all starts with an old, black-and-white photo of Tartaglia in a glorious winter coat.

She slides the door open, quietly in the secret way she learned as a child. Childe doesn’t notice her peering through the crack, as he bends over the side of his bed, choking out breaths.
Blood stains the trash can.

The stranger pulls out a bag of Mora. From the sound it makes when he shakes it, it must hold more than most regular people ever get to see in one place all their lives. “The head of the finance department hates me,” he says. A wink. (Thoma swallows, and wonders, vaguely, if this is how other people feel around him.) “So I do it on purpose to annoy him.”
Okay, that’s—only mildly ridiculous.
Or: Thoma meets Childe by accident. And then keeps seeing him on purpose. Kind of.

‘Congratulations.’ Diluc said, a little more formal this time. ‘I’m happy for you.’
The two of them remained standing there awkwardly, unsure of what to do. Under normal circumstances, perhaps two brothers would hug, go for a drink, discuss wedding plans…
In their case however, Kaeya had no idea what “normal” was. Just a few months ago Diluc would have thrown flames in his particular direction and told him to get out.
And yet, Kaeya was about to test the waters even further with what he was about to request next.
(Screw that, he wasn’t just testing the waters, he was actively swan-diving towards his doom.)
‘I’d like you to be there—’ he started.
‘I’d like that.’ Diluc replied, not even allowing Kaeya to finish his sentence.
‘…as my best man.’
If the silence from before had been unbearable, this one was positively murderous. Kaeya could practically feel his soul leaving his body, floating all the way up to Celestia, only to be denied and thrown into the Abyss instead.
‘...Okay.’

It’s been two months since the storm, and Childe hasn’t seen Zhongli not even once, not since that fateful meeting with the Signora where the truth is finally unveiled.
And what a fun little kick to the gut that is, the realization that not only had he been played by all sides, but he's also being tossed aside like trash now that his use had run its course.
It’s not that Childe doesn’t get it. He’s a Harbinger. He knows first-hand what it means to do his duty, to put the mission first and his personal feelings far, far away, preferably locked up in a box, where it wouldn’t interfere with his job. He knows what it’s like working with vipers, to scheme and plot and lie in wait for the opportune moment to stab his opponent in the back.
But this time, this time Childe can’t help but feel a little (a lot) gutted.
Stupid. He’s gotten himself stupidly attached.
