    Sonic snaps his head up, seemingly no longer aware of the dizziness that made him feel sick or the exhaustion that weighed his body down. All of his previous worries are now replaced by concerns for his little brother.

    Tails was there. He remembers seeing the fox. The last thing he remembers is seeing the fox.

    It's coming back to him now, in an episodic way he remembers what got him here. Eggman attacked. Shadow was there. So was Zavok. And Metal and Chaos.

    There was a masked jackal.

    No one had ever asked Tails if he'd thought the way he'd lived was strange, but even if they had, he would've said, "not really, no," all the same. His living arrangement could only be strange if he'd lived any other way before it. While he might have, at some point, for most of Tails's childhood, he'd honestly known nothing else.

    So when life as he'd known it is turned upside down practically overnight, he doesn't know how to deal with it. He might have the brain of a genius, but he still had the heart of a kid. And that heart felt like it was breaking a little more every day.
