Summary
For years, Dazai's family has done nothing but hop from house to house, attempting to escape a haunting past everyone pretends never existed in the first place.
His eighteenth summer make no exception. Thrown into a reality made of temples and rice fields, urban legends and local traditions, all Dazai aims for is to stay alive long enough to move back to his much-preferred gray, smoky city.
At least, the grumpy boy living in the nearby sanctuary immediately proves to be a good way to cope with boredom—
And perhaps, in the long run, a gentle nudge towards the things he's been restlessly hiding from.

“What?” Poe distantly wonders if he translated Dazai’s words correctly. “Me?” He gapes. “And Ranpo?”
Because who else would Dazai be referring to?
“Yeah, the two of you,” Dazai confirms cheerfully, leaning back until the chair creaked dangerously. “You’ve been together for, what– a year? I was curious how you planned to celebrate.”
Poe could hear his own heartbeat. “We… don’t have an anniversary.”
“Huh,” Dazai hums, tilting his head as if calculating something. Then that sly smile returned. “Why don’t you ask Ranpo about that then?”

Summary
After a suicide attempt, Dazai is cast away to work at the lighthouse his great uncle had owned in the north of the mythical Shimane prefecture. He's not even in the town, he's three nautical miles away from the nearest port, always overlooking a populace that he supposes he can never be a part of.
Dazai finds that this esoteric ward he does not acknowledge offers more surprises than creeping loneliness. When the body of a man washes up on his beach, it seems that fortune has offered him a hand in repairing a piece of himself he has come to tolerate through the eyes of someone who has no idea what it means to be a human.

i can just aspire to reach this level of storytelling. uggghhh if ABSOLUTE CINEMA was a fic it would definitely be this one.
