“Walk me through what you’re thinking.”
Dr. Langdon’s voice came from behind her. Before she had the chance to turn, he stepped closer, leaning over her shoulder to look down at the screen.
It happened so fast. The warmth of him at her back. The clean scent of soap mixed with coffee and something else she couldn’t place. His hand reached around her to point at something on the screen and for half a second, his arm brushing against hers and she became acutely aware of the little space remaining between their bodies.
Her pulse stuttered. Any explanation she had died in her throat, instead only a quiet, choked noise came out. She was effectively frozen, completely against her control.

"O-okay? Like… what?" She almost turned to look away, but Frank lowered his head to keep her eyes trained on him. "Do you wanna watch a movie or something?"
Mel almost laughed. He was so sweet. So unassuming of her.
"Frank, I need to get fucked."
A few weeks after an innocent evening turned intimate, Mel has kept Frank at arms length. Her fears of ruining their friendship, of making work awkward and struggling to find time to date, has made her wary of moving forward with him romantically. He doesn’t know why he does it, says, “Let me,” and gestures for her to turn around. He thinks she’ll wave him off, tell him not to worry, that she can do it herself.
But she doesn’t.
She turns around so her back is to him, and he takes a step closer, reaching up to grab onto her braid, slowly sliding the hair tie off.
He puts it on his wrist, next to the one he already has on, and the plait almost falls apart on its own, but he can’t help putting his hands in her hair, undoing the braid and running his fingers through the strands gently.
“There you go,” he says quietly once her hair is loose around her shoulders.
She sighs and leans into him, her back against his chest, and tilts her head to rest on his shoulder.

It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
