Summary
It's hard to say when exactly it all starts, because the very beginning is even earlier than my first breath in this world. I like to think that Loki and I used to be one being, one infinite thought... which decided to split in half and live in two bodies from then on. This is not entirely true, for I soon learned that fraternal twins originate from two eggs, but this does not fit my romantic narrative. I prefer to think that once, even if only for a brief moment, we were one. And that this is why we ruined everything around us: to become one again.

Summary
Ximeng remained in the orphanage, bound by its rules, its routines, and its cold protection. Girls only, the Sisters decided, kept safe in their own world of order and discipline. Xiwang was sent elsewhere, to another orphanage, where the priest—his father—still walked among the corridors, still cloaked in respectability, still untouchable. The boy would grow in a world that had already been shaped by sin, power, and secrecy.
— If Ximeng was Eve, then Xiwang was the Serpent, tempting in all his glory.

Summary
Maybe there was a universe in which this wouldn’t have happened. Maybe if their mother had been around more. Maybe if she’d been around less. Maybe if their father hadn’t ran out years earlier, clutching his head as Ryan chased him with a bat. Maybe if Natalie hadn’t been so scared, so needy, if she’d been more resilient or independent. Maybe if Ryan had stayed home more instead of fleeing their house like the scene of a crime, coming back reeking of pot and beer. Maybe if he’d left more, left for good, left before whatever sickness had twisted inside him could spread to his sister. Maybe if the sickness had never been inside him, or her, to begin with. Maybe if they’d never gone to that fucking Halloween party.
Maybe, maybe, maybe.
Maybe it was always meant to be.

No one could understand the kind of bond that built, and the security it gave her and Jon. She understood now what Waymar meant about Jon being jealous.
