“Why is gege sitting like that?” San Lang asked softly.
Xie Lian blinked his eyes open. He'd been falling asleep, his body still so tired from everything it had been through in the depths of the cave.
“Hm?” How was he sitting? Xie Lian thought about it for a moment, and then he realised. Oh.
He was sitting with his back against the maple tree, his head tilted slightly backwards and to the side to expose his neck, the insides of his wrists turned upwards, resting on his thighs.
Xie Lian had trained himself to sit like that in the presence of vampires, so there was less chance of them pulling on and twisting his numb arms or hurting his neck.

After an accident, banished fairy Xie Lian becomes the unwilling guest of a sect of vampires. When another powerful vampire destroys the sect and takes Xie Lian home to help him recover, Xie Lian is faced with the challenge of convincing his saviour that he really really wouldn't mind if he were to drink some of his blood.

“Did daozhang think he could come here, flash his enchanted eyes, and pull one over on the Ghost King?” Hua Cheng coos.
Xie Lian’s teeth begin to chatter. “My enchanted…my…aha—”
“I have never seen a performance quite like it in all my long years. Daozhang must be very experienced in getting his way just by fluttering his long lashes. But is he truly foolish enough to believe this act will work on me? Does he think I will fall for his tricks?”

It’s normal to have different levels of closeness to different friends. Xie Lian knew this. After all, his relationships with Feng Xin, Mu Qing, and Shi Qingxuan varied drastically. They interacted in different ways, but that didn’t mean that any of them were less dear to Xie Lian.
But then there was his relationship with San Lang. Where to even start?
A week ago, if you asked him what his relationship with San Lang was, he would have proudly answered that he was his best friend. Of course, this wouldn’t be the whole truth, since Xie Lian had been hopelessly in love with him practically since they had met… but Xie Lian was not so foolish as to think that Hua Cheng in any way returned his feelings. And now, after the events of the past week, he couldn’t even bear to delude himself in his fantasies. The truth was undeniable.

Mu Qing, arms by his side, fists clenched, looks resolutely over Feng Xin’s shoulder, and grits out, “I’m trying.” How am I supposed to relax with your arms around me and your hand pouring heat down my back?
“Maybe try relaxing your shoulders?” Feng Xin offers helpfully, a grin in his voice though he’s wise to keep any true laughter at bay. “They’re nearly bunched up to your ears.”
As Mu Qing rolls his shoulders, he thinks back to what got him in this situation. A stupid spar session. This is the problem with change after eight centuries.

They're strong, and he thinks Feng Xin says something, but he's already losing consciousness, far too gone to make out what the words might be. All he knows is the world around him is getting darker and it’s so strange how safe he feels right now. Why did he come here again..? He can’t remember…
