"Right. A time limit," Emily mutters, feeling her face go hot. She stares at a spot on the carpet. "How would I know? What kind of prize is bound by a time limit?"
Haley tucks a glossy swatch of blonde behind her ear. "The kind with zero 'do not touch' zones. That kind."

Then she speaks. "What's he talking about?"
He can't tell if she's talking to him or to the whole table. She has that way of speaking, broad, inclusive, a leader addressing the room. He waits, hoping someone else will jump in, just to buy his heart a second to slow down.
"Oh, you know exactly what he's talking about," Rossi says, waving a hand like he's shooing a fly.
"Come on, let's not put Aaron on the spot again," JJ chimes in, her voice gentle.
"Oh, right. That." Emily's sigh is perfectly casual. She sets her glass down. "Really, Aaron, don't sweat it. People say all kinds of things when they're drunk."

"Look, I..." he starts, then tries again. "You shouldn't have to sit out here. I can just grab a guest room. It's fine."
This time, Emily pauses her typing. She doesn't look at him, but her head tilts slightly. "It's okay, Aaron." Her voice is flat. "Enjoy the twenty-thousand-dollar mattress and my eight-hundred-thread-count sateen sheets. The weighted blanket is calibrated for optimal sleep cycles." She finally glances up, her eyes meeting his over the top of the iPad. "You've earned it."
He picks up his sandwich again, if only to have something to do with his hands. He takes another awkward bite.
"The deal is," she continues, her gaze dropping back to her work, "Haley gets the room when you're over. And I get the room when I... well."
He stops chewing.
"... Need the room."

It has to stop. She needs to let Hotch be, to exist in his own orbit without her London-timezone weakness texting through the witching hour about the specific, ruinous memory of his hands. It was the one thing she swore she wouldn't do, leave only to remain tethered by a ghost limb of a relationship. Yet here she is. And he allows it.
She'd kept Hotch in her hotel room sheets until well past noon, a lazy debate about the scruff on his jaw happened between them. She likes the rasp of it between her thighs. Leave it, she'd whispered into his neck, and he'd listened.
The rapid-fire tap of his thumbs on his phone screen is a language she knows too well.
"Who's it?" She asks anyway.
"Just telling Haley I'm on my way."
One eye squints against a sudden, hollow twist in her gut. "Beth with her?"
All Hotch gives her is a look, yes. An itchy, uncomfortable growl escapes her.

Tears sprung to her eyes for the umpteenth time as she shakily breathed through the residual pain. Frustration gripped her chest once again.
God, she wouldn't even be in this mess, waking up from a drug-induced stupor if it hadn't been for her fucking boss. She couldn't do it anymore. Couldn't look him in the eyes and follow orders. If she got out of this place alive - out of the BAU alive - then she'd give him a piece of her mind. Finally tell him how much of a headache he was. Finally tell him how much she despised the way he pitied her with that stupid little frown on his face. She would not let him get out of it easy, no. She was going to force him to listen. Grab his annoying face, tell him just how she feels, and make sure he hears her.
Set after Season 7. Before she leaves the BAU. It follows the same general timeline as the show, but liberties were taken with the timing and details.
