Annabel brushed Wil’s hair away from her neck, an entirely useless gesture given that her hair wasn’t even long enough to get caught in the zip. As she drew the zip slowly up Wil’s spine, Annabel asked, “Do you have any plans for your hair?”
“Not really. I was just going to brush it and…” Wil’s sentence stalled. Annabel was running her fingers up the centre of her back, tracing the path of the zip that she’d just closed. Wil’s spine curved to the touch involuntarily, and she took a shaky breath. “...tuck it behind my ears.”

Hannibal took another sip of wine, then reached out with both hands to cup Will’s face. He moved slowly, intentionally. His fingers caressed from the point of Will’s chin through the coarse dark hair of his beard, fanning out to his cheeks. When his fingertips reached Will’s ears, he stopped, cradling Will’s jaw in his palms while his thumbs brushed against old scars. He smiled, eyes moving from Will’s reflective gaze down to his slightly parted lips. “Instinct is nothing more than lessons learned and skills acquired over millions of years of self-preservation. Genetic patterns built to keep us alive without thinking. Legs to run or kick, arms to climb or scratch…”
“And mouths to bite?” Will spoke low, eyes darting across Hannibal’s, unsure where to settle his gaze.
Hannibal hummed. “The mouth serves many, many purposes."

Without notice, without a 24-hour warning, Will stands in his foyer, his hands hidden away in the deep pockets of his coat, the collar turned up around his neck. He stares Hannibal down from behind the glare of his glasses for a moment, his gaze climbing slowly up and down his body.
Hannibal realizes that he should be moving, inviting him in—but for a moment, he can only stand there dumbly, frozen by the abrupt arrival of all he has been longing for for nearly a week. Every whisper and command that Will has made through the laptop speakers echoes through his head, replaying, rewinding all the way back to that first phone call.
