The first time Hannibal Lecter saw Will Graham was in the middle of spring, April 3rd, 1978. Hannibal remembered seeing Matron usher another kid inside the orphanage: unruly curls sticking out from his head, cheeks round, an innocent facade. Hannibal thought he’d be just like the other kids—shallow, boring, simple. Nothing more than another story of parents abandoning a child they found annoying and unwanted.
But no. How mistaken he had been.

Hannibal Lecter, 13, is rendered mute by his traumas -- losing his parents, Mischa's murder, his forced cannibalism, and being remanded into a state-run orphanage in his family castle. The story begins after he's been rescued by Robert and Murasaki, who are at a loss as to how to help him. Post-war Paris is filled with memories of Europe's violence, so Murasaki and Chiyoh bring Hannibal to a remote cottage in Louisiana in an attempt to help him recover.
While exploring the bayou, Hannibal meets a local boy named Will, age 11, who seems to know exactly what he needs, even if Hannibal cannot speak.
As the years pass, their bond grows, and becomes unbreakable.

The personality he’d started to construct in his mind fell away when Hannibal looked up from the nearly finished drawing to see the little boy staring back at him. The pair of eyes peering back at him flicked away the second they made contact, and Hannibal started to piece together a new personality. A real one. Are you shy, he wondered?
He gathered his pencils back in his pocket, closed his sketchbook, and stood. The boy’s eyes snapped right back to him, and as Hannibal approached, he could see that he was rigid from anxiety.
“Um.” The little boy exhaled under his breath, “Hi?”
One of his feet was crossed behind the other in a timid little gesture. Hannibal took note of his body language; he was uncomfortable. Maybe even scared. Hannibal didn’t want to make him scared.

Hannibal has been mute for all of his teenage years, but with the help of some therapists and his Aunt’s attendant, Chiyoh, he’s learning to speak again.
Hannibal has never been so intrigued with one of his Uncle’s hires, and Will seems to be just as interested.

Salivating at the sound of a bell, hungering at the sight of him. He wanted to be so deep inside Hannibal’s cathedral of a mind that the very sound of Will’s breath would set the beast’s brain on fire, pulling on chains with no will of its own.
For now, though, he needed to nurse the man back to health. All in good time.
In which both Hannibal and Will survive the fall, with Hannibal gravely injured and nonspeaking. They navigate this new dynamic and the aftermath of becoming through exchanging power, vulnerability, and ownership- something bright as hellfire, holy as the tail of the fallen morning star.
