Gently unwrapping the fabric package revealed a smooth obsidian stone. It was larger than his fist and had light markings that encircled it. A gift from the Führer, it had been in his custody for forty years at least.
Now, as he stared at its smooth reflective surface, he felt that it had been fated to come into his care. A man such as himself who made vampiric monsters, discovered ways to cheat death, and worked alongside the likes of magical sharpshooters, witches, and ancient werewolves could hardly have much more of a mark to leave on the world. But Dok knew that for all the days behind him, the future was still infinite with possibility.
Setting the stone down carefully onto the wooden floor, he grabbed the sample cup and stood to his full height.

“Chicken butt,” Rocky replies hesitantly, with more than a tinge of exasperation in his tone. Hah! Just as I’ve trained him! I cackle, and almost forget what I was planning to say.
“I f–f-found a movie for us to watch!” The ‘F’ sound has my teeth grinding uncomfortably against my lips. I wrestle with it for a second, and then force myself through it. I take a quick pause between my sentences in an attempt to calm myself and my stutter, but I know it’s not going to do anything. “It’s about a little girl, and an alien. We humans have a lot of different ideas and depictions of what aliens are like. Th–th–this one’s unique, but it’s still nothing like you. To be honest, I can’t say I’ve seen anyone guess that the first aliens would be… giant rock spiders.”
“Rocky scary space monster,” he sings, proud.
“Y-yes, yes. Grace leaky space monster,” I recite. That’s our little duo, ain’t it?

Astarion should have died that night. In the story we know he did exactly that. Here, things went a little differently and he is very much alive.
However, healing magic has its limitations, and the Astarion who survived is markedly different from the one that fell to the Gur's clubs.
A month into recovery, he's still coming to terms with his loss of independence. Bedbound, partially mute, and being cared for by the same person who saved him in the first place: his mother. Apparently her adventuring days didn't fully end, even after decades of playing at being a proper Upper City wife.
Even worse, soon his beloved father decides caring for Astarion is a waste of time and resources, and tries to convince his mother to send him to... somewhere, anywhere, else.
It's amazing, what you start to notice when you're forced to stop and pay attention to people not named Astarion. So many aspects of his world and family, he now sees all too clearly. Out of the one eye that still works, anyway.
