Summary
The black t-shirt he wore—Zanka didn’t know how he could tolerate the colour in this heat—clung tight to his skin, loose by only mere inches instead of his usual three-sizes-too-big apparel he donned on other days. A terrible observation for his brain to focus on, because although the curtains were closed to block out the sun and light barely reflected off the dark material, Zanka could still trace the faint outlines of his waist and his ribs and his chest with his eyes, and now he was struggling to inhale again because his throat scratched like sandpaper, dry despite the fact he’d just taken a drink.
Zanka raised his water bottle to his lips to find it empty.
Follo rolled his head over to him then, and Zanka clutched the empty bottle as though it were a stress-ball, his fingers going numb from the tension.
“You ever think about the ocean?” Follo asked.
Leave it to his torturer to bring up water when he’d run out.

Summary
"Iori! Are you dying?" Hakuri reaches out the grab her by the shoulders too, but the girl sidesteps him, grimacing.
"Don't squash the food. And no, why would I be dying?"
"Are you bleeding?" Chihiro asks next.
Iori's jaw drops open, and her face progresses from pink to tomato-coloured in a manner of milliseconds. Brighter than any faux-vegetable in the produce aisle.
"How did you know my- wait," she begins to say, then her face scrunches up in profound confusion.
"So you are bleeding? Why'd you hide it from us! You could be dying!" Hakuri is waving his arms around in frantic motions, the blaze of panic bursting alive inside him again.
—
Hakuri and Chihiro are convinced Iori is hiding an injury. She's wondering how the hell she get stuck with two idiots.

Summary
Follo liked to pretend he didn't know what the shifty eyes and arched brows were referring to. Pretended they didn't always get shot his way after interactions with a certain blue-eyed boy who seemed to orbit him as of late. Feigned ignorance as to why she could possibly be scrutinizing him. Follo had nothing to hide. He’d never done anything wrong or worthy of suspicion in his life.
Rule one of the Cleaners: never admit anything personal to Riyou, no matter how many scathing looks she sent your way. He's watched far too many innocent souls fall victim to her trap countless times. That girl was like an encyclopedia of embarrassing anecdotes, which she would gladly whip out at the most inconvenient of times. To humble you, to admonish you, to blackmail you into doing her chores. The moment you confessed some vital piece of information to her, she’d store it away to weaponize later.
—
Follo has been slowly realizing his minor interest in Zanka might just be a crush, and he might actually have a chance at it being reciprocated. What to do about it? Attempt to take him on a not-quite date—preferably without alerting the suspicions of the gossip-spreading monsters in the Cleaners.

Summary
Fu’s mouth opened into a big circle, clamped shut, opened again, closed again, and repeated this motion for about five cycles before he noticed Zodyl’s eyebrow twitching in annoyance and choked on a squeaky noise. He attempted a smile, though his jowls seemed compelled downward by their own intense form of gravity, pupils as small as the head of a sewing pin.
“I–my–the room–”
“Spit it out,” Zodyl grumbled.
The boy took one deep inhale, and began to spew words as if under the panicked belief that he’d die if he didn’t get them out all at once. “Jabber was trying to get me to try this poison but I didn’t want to because it’s poison and poison is–I’m not good, very good with it, so I said no and then he was mad and he said we should fight but I didn’t want to fight but then he tried to fight me anyway and I ran to my room and then he…” Fu began panting, his voice trailing off into a whisper as he finished his rant. “...used Mankira, and my mattress… um… it’s kind of… destroyed?”

Summary
“Alcohol. Heard you guys are famous for the stuff around here,” he said, raising the poisons with the same energy he would a beer bottle. “Couldn't pass up a chance to try it.”
Zanka's lip curled up in some mixture of anger and disgust. “Alcohol is forbidden on Hell Guard grounds.” He hit his staff into the ground and pointed to the exterior side of the wall. “And so is enterin' past curfew, which was two hours ago. You will drop the alcohol and wait until dawn to re-enter, as is proper.”
Jabber huffed a short laugh, his grin winding in fiendish joy at the further sinking of the other boy's frown. Anger radiated from him like a furnace. Offended by Jabber’s audacity to ignore his academy's sacred (dumb as fuck) rules.
Poking this beast was going to be fun.
—
Jabber infiltrates the Hell Guard for information, and tries to smuggle poisons onto academy grounds. Zanka catches him in the act, and he is not impressed.
