Summary
Samira Mohan was not standing in the Hub by 7:15. Instead, by 7:45 Jack had left her three missed calls and two voicemails. Normally that sort of behavior would label him as an overbearing boss, but it was January and the city was vicious and cold and the roads were slick and Samira was late for work and Jack–
Well, Jack Abbot was many things but he was most definitely not a hopeless romantic. Any sentimentality on the idea surrounding love and soulmates had been lost on him when his wife died ten years ago. When Jane died, so did the part of him that believed in love after loss. After all, he had seen people remarry. Had known that the idea of such a thing was possible and genuine and–
And Jack Abbot was convinced he would never love again.
OR
Samira Mohan is late for work. She's never late. Jack Abbot is aware of this and spends his shift responding to a massive pileup MCI while trying to not spiral about Samira's sudden radio silence. But then the paramedics bring in a patient and Jack's world stops spinning.

Summary
More than one reasonably good-looking man had approached her, offering to buy her a drink and trying to discuss the presentation she'd given on social determinants of health. It was nice of them to offer, nicer still that her attending position at Presby had come with research funding, but discussing the paper she'd worked on for nearly a year with these men was merely an unwelcome distraction from her clandestine eavesdropping on her ex-boyfriend.

Summary
“It’s weird, not having Robby here,” Mel is saying, dragging Samira back into the conversation between the residents. “And Dr Al-Hashimi hasn't shown up either.” That is strange, Samira thinks absently. Dr Bryan is back from semi-retirement to cover as attending, but the absence is noticeable. “I'm sure we can figure out how to be good teachers, but it’s a little harder when you don't have your mentor to help."
“I don’t know,” Samira mutters before she can stop herself, still staring at Dr Abbot’s letter on her screen. “Just do the opposite of whatever Robby would do.”
It’s only in the expanding silence afterward that Samira realizes she has said that it out loud.
In the wreckage left after the 4th of July shift, Samira starts gathering the shattered pieces of her life. The question now is in what order does she want to put them together.

Some divides form quietly, without warning. Others hit like a fist. They leave no line, only impact.
It happened like that. Fast. One moment, it was just another day, just another conversation about plans, or the lack of them. The next, she woke up with a black eye and a bloody nose.

Summary
There's this feeling in her chest, something heavy, yet hollow. Something that tells her she doesn't fit anymore - she used to, she knows that. She used to feel at home in this ER and with these people. But now, now there's a distance in the glances she gets, a quizzical judgement. Almost as if they're asking why she's still here.
I don't know! She wants to scream at them. But I also don't know where else to go. She admits to herself quiety.
It fills her brain with static and her body with discomfort.
But it's funny. All of that stops.
The noise. The frustration. The worry.
It all stops when she looks at him.
And he stands there, like a safe haven. The eye of the storm, nothing but pure calm laced into a prosthetic with salt and pepper hair.
It calls to her like a lighthouse, beckoning her in with nowhere else to go.

Summary
Don’t throw up in the sink, she tells herself.
The cabinet swings open easily. Her eyes fall on the row laden with orange bottles of meds. Prazosin, for Johnathan Abbot, often prescribed for improving sleep, especially when the patient experiences frequent nightmares.
The eyes of Dr. Mohan, M.D., have already flicked to the high dose bottle of Pregabalin before the brain of Samira Mohan has fully registered the name. Johnathan Abbot.
Abbot? Her breathing hitches. As in, PTMC’s Dr. Jack Abbot?
Fuck, she thinks. I really shouldn’t throw up in this sink.
Samira Mohan is just trying to get a life outside of the hospital. She accidentally ends up with the keys to Jack Abbot’s townhouse.

Summary
“Wait,” Trin said slowly. “Wait a fucking minute.”
Mel looked between them, baffled. “Are you playing house with Zaddy Night Shift?” Trinity said, glee breaking across her face.
“Who is Zaddy Night Shift?” Mel asked, at least two decibels louder than the entire previous conversation. Princess started walking over. Samira put her face in her hands. “I am Zaddy Night Shift,” Dr. Ellis said, breezing by. “And I don’t play house. I provide a loving home for the right woman.”
“My heart belongs to another, king.” Trinity said absently. Mel looked at her in confusion. “Not you, Melancholy.”
“I do not understand what’s happening.” Mel announced cheerfully.

Samira loves Jack Abbot, but she doesn't tell him.
Not because she doesn't feel it, but because she knows, or at least is convinced, that he doesn't love her the same way.
They've been together for months, but there's an absence that weighs more heavily on Samira than she admits: in all that time, Jack Abbot has never told her he loves her.And she learns to live with it. Or pretends to learn. She prefers having a part of him to having nothing at all.
