In the beginning, I didn’t even know what to write. Even if I did eventually learn charms to protect the journal from prying eyes and sticky hands, it’s not like I wanted to declare “Hello, I'm Basilton, your local hopelessly queer vampire! Here are my most embarrassing thoughts,” on the first page.
Once I had (shamefully) committed to the idea of writing in a diary, it became easier to let it out: daily entries, drifting thoughts, pro and con lists, poetry, and heartfelt confessions began to fill the pages until it felt normal. Until the shame and doubt melted away, leaving nothing behind but catharsis. Until I filled the book to the brim and had to decide if this would be A Thing I Did.
