“Will really cares about you, you know?”“I care about him a lot, too,” Mike mutters at the ground.
“I know,” Jonathan smiles. Of course he knows that. He’s known Mike since the boy was five years old. He’s seen him share his comic books and stand up to bullies and sleep at Will’s side like he could fight off the nightmares with his bare hands.
“The two of you are just kind of different-”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Mike snaps.

“Did it hurt?” He leaned in, looking more closely.
“Well yeah.” Mike laughed nervously. “Still does actually, kind of throbs."
“It looks... really good.” Will’s stare unfixed from the piercing and took in Mike as a whole. His baggy black t-shirt over a tighter long sleeve waffle knit shirt that covered his arms, loose jeans, silver rings, chipped nail polish. And the newest addition: A shiny silver bar bisecting his eyebrow, the skin around it still a little angry.
“When did you get so cool?” Will tilted his head, scrunching his nose. Mike's heart picked up speed.
Mike checked his watch. “About an hour ago when this big dude stabbed me in the face.” With nonchalance that would be squandered instantly if Will caught a glimpse of his pulse. Will laughed a little too hard, eyes lingering on Mike’s face a little too long.

Mike and Will are finally free of Hawkins and all its literal and metaphorical monsters. Mike is on a self acceptance journey, experimenting with his identity in college, and Will tries to keep it in his pants. In other words, the childhood best friends to lovers situationship final boss with a destined happy ending.

A morning in Will and Mikes life after 3 years of being together in NYC
“Will,” his voice was already thick with the knot in his throat, “I can’t keep doing this, if I don’t tell you now I’ll never get it out and I can’t keep lying it’s so ha-”
“Mike. Breathe, you're rambling” Will squeezed his hand just a bit tighter and Mike matched his breathing
“Will, I love you. I think I always have,” His eyes fell to the floor, tears burning his eyes as he fights himself to continue, “I-I don't want this to change anything but I just- it’s always been so different with me and you and I think it’s always been you? I jus-”
“Mike, Mike look at me.” Mike kept his head down.
“Michael.” At the sound of his full name, Mike looked up — only to see Will with the softest look of adoration on his face. He felt slightly cold hands cup both cheeks. Teary eyed, Will chuckled before clearing his throat to speak, leaning in closer, “Can I kiss you?”

Her gaze dropped to Mike’s hand on Will’s wrist. “Don’t hurt Papa!” she begged desperately.
For a split moment, Will didn’t understand, the thought so far-fetched, improbable, and ridiculous that it didn’t even cross his mind, but then the realization hit him like a bucket of cold water being dumped over his head.
She thought Mike was going to hit him.
Mike must’ve understood it at the same time, because his hand fell away, quick, like he’d been burned.
.........or: When Will and Mike’s four-year-old daughter walks in on an argument, she mistakes raised voices and hands for something far worse - she thinks Mike is going to hurt Will.

In some ways, Will always knew this conversation was coming. He knew if he came out, there’d be more than just one conversation about it. His mom would want to reassure him, and Jonathan would probably give him some awkward but well-intentioned advice. His friends would– well hopefully they’d tell him they’re still his friends. They might even tease him about it, if they took it really well.
And Mike…
“Can we talk?” He bounced on the balls of his feet, looking awkward and earnest and so normal it hurt Will’s teeth to think about. “Heart to heart?”
...
Mike and Will have a heart to heart, in which Mike asks some extremely gay questions, Will is heartbroken and oblivious, tears are shed, truths are spilled, and love is found at last.

Summary
Will couldn't count the times Mike had carried his bags and walked him to class and run up the stairs when Will called his name, like he was doing just now. He was all gangly arms catching on the doorframe, curls flopping over his head as he angled his head, shoulders heaving as he panted "Yeah? What do you need?" breathlessly, in that special Will-only voice Max had pointed out last week, ruining Will's night with the observation.
And so when Will said shyly "Can you get us some more blankets from the basement?" he knew Mike would reward him with a dazzling grin, like Will had done something right by asking him, by letting him walk up and down three flights of stairs just to bring Will blankets because he was cold.
Max was right, Mike did love to be needed. But she didn't know the whole story, because the rest of it was something Will kept very secret. The part Max didn't know was that, in a buried, dark, hungry way, Will loved needing Mike.
Or, Will worries he needs Mike too much. Max sees it differently.

Michael stepped closer to Will, until he was nearly pressed against his side. He looked at him, head tilted down to meet his gaze. His boots made him taller, making the height difference he and Mike shared even more pronounced. Will shivered when he felt a hand press against his lower back.
“My choices are yours, my prince. If you would like me to distance myself, I will do so without hesitation. Would you like that?”
Will stared, mouth agape. Michael’s eyes were boring into his soul. Mike had never looked at him like that, and it was doing things to him. Slowly, he shook his head.
Michael smirked, looking pleased.
“Hey,” Mike snapped. “I said back off, okay?”When an alternate version of Mike, a strong, confident knight, appears in Hawkins, the Party attempts to help him get home, and Will attempts to survive his flirting.

“What was your test on again? The one you were in study group for with friends?” Holly plays it up, eyes skyward in thought, and then landing on Mike knowingly, her lips curving in a simper. “Chemistry? Anatomy?”

Mike stared back unflinching. “That’s not what I meant. You think I have a problem with being queer? No. Of course not. Believe it or not, I love it. It means I get to have you.”
The earnest look in Mike’s eyes was enough to melt Will. So he tried to smile and placed his hand on top of Mike’s. “So what do you mean, then?"
