Summary
Enter Arthur Lester. Your English rose, your songbird, your Romeo if you want to be dramatic. He's one of many, millions of others scattered across crimson keys like blood-red nebulae.
He's horribly melodramatic. It's almost cute. He cries much more than he should, really, and god is he loud when he screams. You can't hate it though, the sound is quite beautiful. His heart is in the right place though, and he always knows what he wants. He's like you, in a way. So of course, you need to talk to him.

Summary
Arthur thinks he’s crying. Kayne once told him that he was never quiet even when he couldn’t speak, and this is what he must’ve meant. He has no lungs to scream but there’s a wave of some distant emotion, old and deep and terrible, welling up from wherever his soul resides and it takes the shape of a desperate and helpless cry. But he’s only a whisper, more filth than man, and there’s mud where his tongue used to be.

Or, Arthur can do nothing but think.

Summary
The Big Apple. City of opportunity, and of the future, but one that's swarming with an underbelly deeper then any ocean.
This is where John, Arthur and Noel have decided to start their new lives as private investigators. Still connected in body, John and Arthur try to navigate a life neither signed up for, with Noel acting as peacekeeper and instigator. It's not perfect, but it's a life that works for them, hard-earned and carved from the city that never sleeps.
This is until their routine is disturbed by a new client, claiming his employees are turning up dead and looking to hire Lester & Co. to suss out the killer. There's just one problem for Arthur: their client represents the Ubangi Club, a venue well known for its female impersonators. Can Arthur navigate the case while keeping his past and present separate? Or will he be forced to confront his old life once and for all?

Summary
"John felt almost dizzy: motion sick and helpless in the heart of the room. For a moment, he couldn’t help but wonder what it might be like to be on the other side of the glass, to drift endlessly in a sea of dazzling colors and hypnotic visions."
-----
John breaks into an aquarium in the middle of the night for a bit of quiet reflection. Unfortunately for him, he runs into a familiar face who has his own thoughts to get lost in as they both admire the ocean life.

Summary
But his king was nowhere to be found, and Arthur Lester was drowning.
He heard a mumble, and he realized Arthur was clawing at the floor, digging his nails into the hardwood.
Kayne tilted his head, “Hm? What’s that?”
Arthur cleared his throat, voice still thin and raspy. “Don’t go.”
//
Or, Kayne gives himself another wager. He did not expect his desire for the wrong outcome.

Summary
Charlie Dowd was dead. His body moved (although how much of it was still the body he had ten years ago) and his mind still thought (scarred and broken the same as if not more than his body). His name still was, though it was caked in mud and clay and tugged down by thin black roots and chains that gleamed yellow in what little light he saw.
He’d lived through hell. And he’d walked out. Stumbled more like it, into the sun, tears streaming down his face. And had to face the aftermath.

Or I thought about Charlie using the name Noel while also thinking about Lazarus from the Bible and "Lazarus Rises" by Berlkie Novak-Stolz a few seconds too long and now there's a whole thingBookmarked by lostwordsfound

Summary
It was almost as if time was beginning to whittle away at him in a way he wasn’t sure he'd felt before, like he was aware of every moment, and yet felt none of it at all. It was painfully numb—as close as he could get to feeling pain—like he was just going through motions that left less of a mark in his immortal skin than they used to. The excitement of hearing the bloody wet pop of a skull shatter apart didn’t feel as right as it did the last time.
The last time he’d felt like this– well. That was around the time he’d met Arthur. It felt like a sign then that Arthur came about when he did, when he was sure he’d have to claw apart his own skull just to feel something. He tilted his head, screwed up his face in frustration.
“Huh,” he said, to the Arthur pinned underneath him, abdomen split open and spilling out blood slick insides. “Everything is starting to feel… repetitive lately. Have you ever felt that before?”

“So what are you going to do then?” he asked, voice still thin and strained.
“Well,” he said, barely suppressing a grin. “I thought I’d leave you with a little gift!”
Arthur shifted, visibly tense, and Kayne could hear the music again. “What kind of gift?”

“You know what?” he hooked a finger around Arthur’s tie, tugged him forwards. “Why don’t I just see what’s inside you?”
Arthur’s carefully schooled contempt fell apart, giving way to something that looked like fear. Who was unpredictable now? “What?”

Summary
Antoine stirred in Arthur’s lap, and spoke before Arthur could slap his hand over his lips.
“Who’re you?” Antoine asked warily, then coughed and turned to spit out a mouthful of blood. His shirt was in tatters, and the dark ink clearly visible across his exposed chest was shiny with sweat.
“Fuck,” John whispered almost inaudibly.
“Who am I? I’m a fr—no, that’s been overused. Ack! Nevermind. Better question, little peasant, do you know who you are to me? My present. Thank you so much, Arthur darling, for delivering him.”~~~
What if Arthur had used the talisman to revive Antoine, and then Kayne showed up and asked for the stone anyway?

Summary
“What’s yellow and white and red all over?” Kayne asked in greeting, head twisted to one side, eyes wide and vacant. When he received no response, an exaggerated frown tugged at his features. “Come on, not even one single guess?” The wind howled through the bare, tortured trees. Undeterred, Kayne wandered closer. “Why, it’s you, my little autumn leaf. Red suits you.” The row of white teeth in his smile looked like a line of pills, fourteen pristine, deadly promises. “How was the hunt?”
“It wasn’t—” But it was.
--
Kayne arrived after the first hunt, read the question written in the blood spattered on John’s cloak, and offered him a deal.

Summary
Now with a body of his own, John finds himself dwelling on certain thoughts that he once avoided. In particular: the nature of the act of consuming. The mortal need for sustenance. Some of the things they’ve had to do to survive… and his own, newly-made corporeal form, that has gone so perfectly untouched by them all.
In the end, he comes to one very simple conclusion. He wants visible proof of everything he's survived, and he wants to give something back to his friend. There's one easy way for him to have both.
