"Is Will your boyfriend?" Holly asks, and Mike immediately chokes on the lettuce in his mouth.
"Wh- what?" he gasps, dropping his fork and swallowing back the salad that suddenly feels like cement in his throat. Holly's looking at him with a strange expression, like she's trying to figure something out.
"Will. Is he your boyfriend?" she repeats, even though Mike very obviously heard her, and the question doesn't feel any less shocking the second time.
"No!" He yelps. "No, why would you think that?"
Holly shrugs, taking another bite of spaghetti like this is a normal conversation and she is not slowly killing him. "Nancy calls him your little boyfriend sometimes, and Mom says he's your person, which basically means the same thing, and you live together and act like a couple and unpack groceries together, and- I don't know. Seems like it could be a thing."

Will smiles encouragingly at him, swiping his tears away and kissing his forehead again. "Let's make a deal, okay?" he murmurs, voice low and full of a bittersweet sort of hope. "If in five years we're both doing better, and we're not dating anyone else-" Mike blanches at the concept of dating anyone else, of Will dating anyone else- "we can try again, okay?"
Five years sounds like a terribly long time. In five years, Mike will be twenty-three. He'll be done with college, will have a career, could be living anywhere in the world for all he knows, and the same goes for Will.
But five years is a whole lot less than forever, so Mike will take it.
In the summer of 1989, Mike and Will fall apart. Five years later, they fall back together.

“Hi,” Will blurts out before he can stop himself, and he can feel his cheeks heat up in embarrassment so quickly it must be unhealthy somehow. “Uh -“
The guy shuts his phone off and reaches up to his ear to pull out an earbud. He shoots Will a grin, which does not help the whole blushing-crimson thing. “Hey,” he says coolly, and Will admires his composure while he wills the earth to collapse beneath him.
The guy quirks an eyebrow at Will when he doesn’t look away, then seems to take in his slightly disheveled and paint-stained appearance - he’d had his painting and drawing class just before he’d gone home, and had managed, as he always does, to get paint everywhere - because his smile grows a little softer, a little fonder. His shoulders relax against the bench, and Will lets out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. “You get sexiled?”
misery loves company, especially when the company comes in the form of a cute English major.

Kei blames the sunlight, and the way it gleams in Yamaguchi’s eyes, ever so open and earnest in a way that Kei has never managed himself to be. Molten brown turns into amber, the sunbeam bouncing in his iris like a kaleidoscope. It resembles the iridescent cuirass of the beatle Kei had on the cover of his first bugs’ book. He used to spend his afternoons alone, bending the book so the sunlight would bounce on it in all the right places, making the colours shine. That was, of course, before Tadashi came along.

Under soft covers, Mafuyu is curled up towards him. Kedama, the over energetic pup, is quiet for once as he sleeps on his owner’s chest. Mafuyu looks even softer than usual with his half-dried hair, face drowsy from his earlier bath, wearing Uenoyama’s clothes that are a bit loose for him.
Uenoyama just hums as an answer and doesn’t stop toweling his wet hair, because he’s sure butterflies will come out flying if he opens his mouth.
