Not immediately. Not with alarm. Just with a quiet pause in the doorway, the tray in his hands held a moment longer than necessary.
“Ryuzaki,” he says, mild as ever.
L looks up from the computer, rotating his chair to both face Watari and keep his knees drawn close.
“Yes?”
There is no sheet. No fitted sheet, no flat sheet, no comforter. Just the bare mattress, off-white and ridged, the way it must have been now for a good while.
Watari sets the tray down. “How long,” he asks, carefully, “have you been sleeping like this?”
