During their visit to Monstropolis, Randall opens a door to collect more Scream. But, due to time flowing differently in each world, that door just happens to lead to a 7-year-old Sora's closet back home on Destiny Islands. This… was all a joke, right? Surely Sora would wake up now and smile, asking why Riku was staring at him while he was sleeping. Sora would tell Riku to come over there and give him a hug, and he would be wrapped in a warm embrace. Or, even better, Riku would just wake up and Sora wouldn’t be in a hospital bed, unconscious, the only proof of his life was the radar showing his heartbeat. All three of them would be together, and they wouldn’t be so miserable as they are now. Or would be, because this isn’t real.
It’s not real.
But it was. Riku needed to realize that.

After Sora ends up in a major accident that Riku barely has a recollection of, he has to face through a lot of guilt and loathing. He tries to be alongside Sora through the journey of recovery while slowly remembering the details of what happened that night.
