They sit in silence for a while, and it's almost as if there's a weight hanging between them now. Darry doesn't push the issue, but there's something about the haziness of Ponyboy's eyes that has Darry reaching forward to feel for his forehead. He's hot to the touch, and he frowns. “Do you feel sick?”
Pony shakes his head. “I dunno. I'm okay. You should go back to bed.”
“You don't make the rules 'round here, kid. How long have you been feeling like this?” Darry asks.
“I ain't sick.”
“You're burning up a bit there, kiddo,” he tells him quietly, pushing Ponyboy’s bangs away from his face.
“Not true,” he argues, shaking his head.
Darry furrows his eyebrows. “Why are you arguing with me?”
“Am not,” Pony replies, like it’s autopilot just to counter anything Darry has to say to him.
He rolls his eyes. “Alright, tough guy. Hold still for a second.”~

Screaming is one thing, but I know if I open my mouth again the sobs will come. I don't know how close the rest of the athletes and families are standing now, trying to get a look at the excitement, but the last thing I need is to turn on the waterworks in front of a bunch of Socs. I drift for a second before Darry's hand squeezing my shoulder brings me back. He runs his hand through my hair, pushing it out of my face before he rests his hand on my cheek to try and keep my focus.
