I never thought happen to me, I mean, losing Johnny, not that he died or anything, we just fought. Not a play fight, not an argument, a real fight. With the person I'd grown up with, the person who I fought with in rumbles, it felt almost surreal. Despite seeing Johnny in tears, a thing I'd last seen when he got jumped, and even despite my own nose being likely broken.
I couldn't bring myself to care much. I had Gilly anyway, I didn't need Johnny; he'd ratted me out, Gilly'd never do that. She couldn't anyway, I'd lost her too.

The swing moved back and forth in the breeze, squaring softly with each movement. That seemed to snap Darry out of his short-lived, ever-needed moment of peace and contentedness.

It's like everyone became too busy for him, which he also didn't have much of an issue with, but after it became a consistent occurrence, Ponyboy started to feel hopeless that he'd ever have friends. Well, at least until he moves out of Tulsa and to LA, or Denver, or even New York to achieve his dreams in college.
