Summary
Ava is fifteen when she finds out she won't make it past twenty-three.
That's putting it a little lightly. The knowledge rams through her skull and bowls her over onto Tuesday morning's sunny side up eggs. Distantly, she feels Jay jostle her. Mom's layering blankets of spells on her. Everything becomes spring green except for the vision of her own arteries spitting out red onto brown planks. Until the yolk worked into her cheeks starts dripping its typical yellow, her death looks more real than reality.
She dies for a good minute or two, throat blown out. Then, she's back, and Jay blows out her hearing instead.
OR: ava wakes up, remembering her death. she remembers her lover too.

Summary
Gillion's eyes begin to flutter closed, his breaths shorter and shallower and slower until they– they just stop. Nothing moves beneath Chip's trembling hands, no one stirs awake at the ragged tear of Chip's voice, and it's all his fault.
And all around him, smoke-sodden laughter shakes the walls, the floor, ringing again and again and again–
And then Chip gasps awake, the cry of Gillion's name still on his lips, hands still shaking, shaking, someone shaking him.
"It's alright, I'm here to– to. To vanquish."
It's Gillion. Gillion's dead on the floor, hooked through the chest and stained bloody. Gillion's right here, in front of him, eyes wide and concerned. Water drips down his chin, landing on Chip's cheek.
OR: Chip startles awake from a nightmare. Gillion helps.

Summary
Fireflies buzz through a dimming forest. As Sol's light fades from the sky, a blazing campfire keeps a group of restless kids warm and able to see.
There's only two other boys on Buddy's log, but they're both jostling around him, whispering to each other and to other huddles of kids. Earlier in the day, there'd been an arts and crafts station that all the other kids left messy. But Buddy didn't, putting his glue, popsicle sticks, and construction paper neatly back where they'd come from, even when all the other kids left to escape the midday sun's heat by splashing around in the lake.
OR: a twilight tale spun of sol. a childhood memory of buddy dawn's.

Summary
Chip slings up Gillion's hand in his own, and somehow, without further push or pull or any thought of his own, their fingers slide together. Not perfectly interlocked, one by one, but twined together nonetheless, Chip's knuckles sliding about and clasping against Gillion's, sharp ridges of bone pressed harmlessly into soft skin.
"You should stop brooding by yourself, Tidestrider," he finishes, raising an eyebrow at him. "Moon'll always be there. C'mon, have some fun." With me, he might say, if he were any deeper in the drink.
As it is, all he does is tug Gillion towards him. Even though Chip knows Gillion wouldn't budge an inch if he didn't want to, he sways as easy as that, slipping without protest from his watchful post beside the banister to go where Chip leads.
OR: Chip catches Gillion staring up at the moon all alone at a party. A drunken talk ensues, involving papayas, eggs, and the typical sort of sappy feelings one co-captain may share for (and perhaps with) another.

"It'll be fine in the morning," Chip dismisses.
"It's not the morning yet," Gillion says, even though they're corralled away from the open sky so it could be morning—that hand could've been perched on his shoulder for hours, really. "You're hurt right now."
And, well. It's simple. Uncomplicated, like Chip said, so there's really no other way to reply to that other than an equally uncomplicated: "Okay."
"Okay," Gillion parrots back, a broad smile taking over his face. Chip doesn't know where the sheer sunniness of it comes from, considering Gillion's from a world the sun can't touch. He looks away.
OR: Gillion helps bandage Chip up after being attacked by a titan of the Deep.

“So, what’s in Highcourt?” Max asks. “Something… important, right? ‘A big deal. ’ What is it?”
Buddy and Kristen exchange a look, and she nods to communicate ‘let me handle this.’ After which, they open their mouths at the exact same time and tumble over one another catastrophically, like two raccoons fighting in an unstable garbage can.
“We have a problem we need solved, like, pronto—” she starts.
“I truly can’t go to hell with Kristen when I die,” he interjects.
“—we’re trying to get unhitched and it’s– goddammit, Buddy, stop saying that! We aren’t going to hell!”Kristen and Buddy enlist the help of Max to get themselves out of an arranged marriage that predates their very births. It's going to be a long drive.
