“I missed you” Inupi says, gazing out at the blackness of the night like there is a view to be had. He sniffs, puts out his cigarette and brushes his hands down himself. “But I still miss the fear”
Hajime's gaze flickers down to him. “The fear?”
“When I thought I was gonna die every night, when I fought. It’s a drug, Y’know and you’re all addicted. I had to - live when I left you. Actually, live and at first it sucked. Cos it’s boring and it’s tedious. I realised pretty early I never stood a chance of winning you back against a drug like that”
Koko’s throat hurts, like there is a ball in it.
“It’s really fucking sad” He blows smoke out his nose, tips his head back. “That you’ve had that little speech prepared for over a decade” and he doesn’t give himself a chance to consider the truth of any of it.

Seishu shoves him away. “Shut the fuck up. You don’t get to make decisions for me. You wanted out of my life, and you got it.”
“You didn’t try as well. You never called.”
“Because you didn’t want me,” Seishu shouts, hitting his own chest. “You never cared about me, not like I cared about you. You just fucking threw me away even whilst I was bleeding for you, right in front of you. You never reached out for me.”
“I did.” He extends his hand and Seishu skitters back, putting space between them. Hajime sighs, exhausted. “You just never accepted it.”
Seishu’s hand on his chest bunches up his thin shirt over his heart. He’s breathing hard. “You never accepted it as well.”
“We’re a mess. We’ve always been a mess. Barely a functioning person between us.”
A future where Koko and Inupi are happy might not save everyone, but they still deserve each other. It takes a midnight corpse and a burnt pair of heels for them to work through everything unsaid between them.
With faltering steps, Sieshu Inui and Hajime Kokonoi learn to accept who they are.
