If Mrs. Aberdeen had been married to a good, kind man who loved her, and who she loved, maybe Zeke could have swallowed his feelings, kept an appropriate amount of distance from his beautiful parishioner, and stayed on the righteous path, secure in the knowledge that there was a place for him in heaven.
And then, in the belly of those nights, he would twist around in his sheets just the wrong way, feel a spark of friction, think of Prudence’s laugh, and know in his bones that there was no power that could have stopped him from loving Prudence—not a good husband, not a kind man, not G-d or the Devil himself.

"That's not how these things work! It's just—slow going, is all. Change takes time, Crowley."
"Sure, yeah. Climb your way up, but not too much, ey?"
"It's not about me," Aziraphale says, snappy, in that holier-than-thou voice. Crowley smiles mirthlessly, bares his teeth.
"No, you're just a tool for the greater Good, are you. How's that working out, d'you think?"
"Swimmingly, actually. The Metatron really appreciates my suggestions." He smiles—soft, wondrous, almost disbelieving. Crowley wants to scratch it out of his face. Wants to shake him until he comes to his senses and drops to his knees and begs him—
"I always knew you were naive, but not this much," he hisses. "They're going to chew you up and put you through the grinder until you can't take it anymore and then, when you finally, finally snap, they'll cast you down like they did the rest of us."
Aziraphale's eyes flick down once—to his mouth, Crowley realizes, and abruptly steps back, face prickling with shame. Shame, him. Imagine that.

His eyes are so shifty. Crowley has missed this menace more than air.
“Come on, an estimate then. A guess. I’m assuming you were in training for at least a week - “
“A month.” Aziraphale immediately slaps a hand over his mouth, whereas Crowley’s drops open in delight.
“A month!”
“It was really quite excessive,” he replies. “I mean, a whole month to discuss ‘policy changes’! I may not have been stationed there for a few millennia, but honestly. Why did I need to spend a month being told all of the rules that they brought me up in the first place to change?”
Crowley refuses to allow the deflection, feeling more delight than he knows what to do with. “You’ve only been gone for a month and a half! What on earth did you DO?”
