Someone was smoking
Jason was burning
He wanted to scream but he thought his jaw was broken and his throat was worn and raw from him already screaming for hours. The smell of cigarette smoke mixed with the smoke of burning wood until all Jason could see was gray clouds. That didn’t stop the Laughter or the taunting as it came closer and closer. He tried to move away, scrambling against the metal floor, but the pain of his shattered legs was too much and he fell back to the ground.

Homeless teenagers weren't uncommon in the area, or in Gotham as a whole. Batman wasn't surprised to hear that another child had found their way onto the streets.
“I'll see what I can do ma'am, but if he doesn't want to go to a home for the night there's not much I can do.”

“I'm going to move the blanket okay? I promise I won't hurt you.”
He didn’t get a response, but the shaking seemed to slow as he spoke. He took off his gloves before peeling the blanket away from their face. It was almost stuck to their face, clinging to them as Batman pushed it away. Unkempt black hair hung over pale skin and dull blue eyes. He sat frozen as the eyes of a ghost slowly looked up at him.

Summary

But he can't focus on that right now. He needs to stay in the present, he needs to focus on protecting his city. So when a stranger arrives in his apartment late one night, he doesn't know how to react.
