Summary
Obi-Wan had to put an end to it. They needed to survive together: they needed to get off this planet and win the war, and then they could mend the ripped fabric of their friendship. They’d done it before. The words were already there, right on his lips, but then Anakin looked at him again with the same eyes that had looked at him so many times they were more familiar than his own: and Obi-Wan, feeling like he’d had his throat slit by some invisible force, was struck mute.
Mysteriously dragged out of hyperspace, Obi-Wan and Anakin crash on a lone, desolate planet; with a dead shuttle, an almost-kiss looming unaddressed, and nothing but trees around as far as the eye can see, they venture into the forest to find anything at all to help them. Instead they end up finding each other.

At least that’s what he tells himself—he has to remind himself of it, that he hasn’t gone insane like the people in the village say behind his back, when he sees a figure approaching in the distance, backlit by the bright, golden light of Tatooine’s twin suns.

Masters are not supposed to love their Padawans. Qui-Gon was doing nothing wrong in denying Obi-Wan the attention and validation he so craved, and Obi-Wan knows it is a weakness to dote on Anakin the way he does. To spend the entire year leading up to his thirteenth birthday buying him gifts each time he was off-world, seeing every marketplace through the lens of Anakin’s desires. There was a spike of guilt each time he did it—but he did it all the same. Justified the act of collecting things to give Anakin by reminding himself that the thirteenth birthday is a weighty ritual, it deserves more thought than Qui-Gon gave it all those years ago.
