    Claude and Dimitri are sparring under the moonlight. They don't talk much, yet many things are said.

    «Claude…» chiamò, e si mentì a cuor leggero nel fare un passo in avanti, ora illuminato dalla torcia. «Buonasera.»
    Un refolo di vento si alzò, galoppando per il chiostro che circondava il terreno battuto dell’allenamento, e fece baluginare la luce delle torce. Quando Claude si girò tremò un’ultima volta la fiamma, allungando le ombre tanto che parvero inghiottire il ragazzo — Dimitri trattenne il fiato, covandolo in petto finché non tornò la luce.

    Eventually, Claude looked up, a vaguely displeased look on his face. “Well?”

    “…Well?” Dimitri parroted, feeling slow—stupid. The pounding in his head was getting worse, but that was hardly an excuse.

    “Well, you’ve already cracked your crown on your fall from grace. Though, how far it really could have been…” Claude shrugged, accenting the gesture with a suggestive grin, because he and Dimitri both knew the unspoken answer. “Let’s try and pretend you didn’t crack anything else on the way down, yeah? Put that head to use, and find a next step, even if an actual plan is probably beyond you. At the least, we can’t stay here.”

    He dropped his arrow as he finished speaking, letting it litter the forest floor. It pointed just north of east, toward Fraldarius. Dimitri stared at it, trying to decide whether or not to read into the gesture, why it would matter even if he did. He had no intention of heading east.

    Claude dies in the invasion of Garreg Mach, but he keeps Dimitri company all the same.

    Just an introduction. A first meeting.

    As Dedue had said, there were no… commitments being made today. So no reason for Dimitri to wear his worry as he did, as though the moment were worth more than its weight in gold—and perhaps it was, Dimitri thought, considering the gold of his hair tie, or the shining embroidery of his jacket. It was worth at least those together, in the opportunity it contained. The joint expectations it represented. 

    Just… a first meeting, Dimitri reminded himself. 

    Just Dimitri and Khalid.

    Khalid, brother to the recently crowned Almyran king, officially titled Prince. 

    Khalid, his potential fiancé.

    At the behest of his advisors, Dimitri agrees to seek out marriage.

    The back of Claude’s hand under Dimitri’s own was soft, smooth, though Dimitri knew rough calluses could be found along the tips of his fingers, against the sides of his knuckles. Dimitri lingered on the thought, catching himself in the notion of flipping Claude’s palm over, tracing his fingertips before lacing their fingers together.

    Instead, he focused on the delicate feel of the tendons of Claude’s hand as they pressed into his palm, indulging in the thought that the angle of contact allowed the lines of his palm to slot together with them seamlessly, as though such a position was only natural, beyond reproach.

    Something minute, barely perceptible and difficult to parse explicitly, shifted in the manner of Claude’s breathing, and Dimitri only managed half the thought he’s awake, before Claude spoke, eyes still closed, “Got a good enough look yet, Your Princeliness?”

    Dimitri exhaled a quick breath, giving Claude’s hand a light squeeze in apology. “Sorry,” he verbalized the gesture. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”

    SEQUEL TO MIRROR TO MIRROR

    Claude brought one hand to his hip, digging into skin with his thumb, the closest thing he would consciously allow himself to a tell. It was fine, then. There was no need to keep… observing, let alone ask, because that was Claude’s answer, as if it hadn’t already been clear enough.

    But Dimitri took a measured breath—his version of a sigh, Claude suspected—before saying, “No, you are right, of course. I really should get in some training before the exam. I am somewhat worried about some of the more... sophisticated maneuvers associated with the physical portion of certification. Combat archery demands a certain grace that I tend to find lacking in myself.”

    “I could always help you out.” The words escaped Claude before he had even registered their existence, before he could catch them and force them back down.

    Or a story of getting together, in three training sessions and a certification exam.
