“Do you think I have cooties or something?” Mike asks, and Will turns to meet his eyes.
“Um. No?”
Mike considers this. “Do you have cooties or something?”
Will shakes his head, a little amused, but mostly baffled. Mike chuckles, but he sounds slightly exasperated. When they exchange the glass once more, Mike doesn’t turn the glass, drinking from the exact place as Will had. He shoots a lopsided grin at Will. “If you give me mono, I’m gonna be pissed off.”
Will giggles, taken aback. “Hey, you can’t say I didn’t try.”
Or: Mike and Will have a very special New Year's Eve.

Summary
Honestly, fuck “crazy together.” Mike’s going to have to deal with this – whatever this even is, holy shit – all by his lonesome. Will can’t – he can’t – Jesus Christ.
“But – but you just asked me if I want to go on a date with you. Did I hear that wrong? What am I missing here?”
Mike scoffs again, almost frustrated. Will wants to strangle him, just for having the fucking audacity.
“You’ve never had a boyfriend before. I’m your best friend, who is conveniently a boy that you spend all your time with,” he explains, gesturing between the two of them as if Will doesn’t know this, and Will might actually kill Mike if he keeps this up. “So…don’t you think it would make, like, a lot of sense if we tried it out?”
Mike says all of this as if it’s the most obvious thing ever, when actually, he is clinically insane, and Will wonders how any human being could possibly conceive of any idea as deranged as this one.
or: Mike Wheeler, despite claiming to be straight, decides to embark on a series of dates with one Will Byers - who is, of course, hopelessly in love with him.

Summary
Ninety-six hours.
It’s been ninety-six hours since Will last went to sleep, and, as with most things, Mike worries this might be killing him.
Maybe that’s a dramatic thing to think, but Mike can’t find it in himself to break out of the “agonize about it” mindset that has been normal for him since the seventh grade.
The anxiety is the motor that keeps him going — it drives him to act when the circumstances of his life are impossible to comprehend.
It’s keeping him hovering at Will’s side now, all pretense of personal space discarded and forgotten.
How can he think about what’s acceptable when the smudges under his best friend’s eyes grow more shadowy with each passing day?
Or: Will Byers is in desperate need of a good night’s sleep. Mike Wheeler is extremely committed to making that happen.

Summary
Will wants to ask – no, he wants to demand why Mike thinks it’s fair to leave him alone, to make him live with a soul cleaved in two for the rest of his existence. Will’s never been great at math, but he knows this: He’d spent 1,891 days without Mike Wheeler and 34,415 days with him. Clearly, he’s much more qualified and experienced at being his other half (his better half, as their friends and family had always playfully remarked), and it’s a little ridiculous that Mike is making him accumulate more days to the former’s amount.
or: After spending their whole lives together, Will Byers has to navigate a world without Mike Wheeler in it.

Summary
Will blinks again. Their noses bump. Mike is so close. “I, um. What?” he hisses out, voice hoarse. It can’t be- there’s no way Mike means-
Mike looks mortified, but he’s also not moving away. “Do you think there's a universe,” he repeats, slow and shaky, “where you and I are- you know.”
“Mike,” Will says, verging on exasperated, but too shaky to fully accomplish the tone he’s going for. He can feel Mike’s heart racing where it’s pressed against his own. “Use your words.”
“I want to kiss you,” Mike blurts, dazed and harried. A strand of hair falls into his eyes, and it tickles Will’s cheek with their proximity.

Summary
But Will understands everything. He understands him on a level nobody else ever has and nobody else ever will. It’s scary sometimes, but at times like now, it’s everything he needs.

Summary
“People liked me there,” Will says after a few minutes, staring up at the tragically blank ceiling. “In Lenora, I mean. It was- weird.”
Mike snorts, letting his head loll to the side so that he can see Will’s profile, illuminated in the early evening light, tanned skin and freckles and wide hazel eyes still staring contemplatively skyward. Mike wants Will to turn his face and look at him, wants that wide-eyed gaze on him, wants to swallow every breath that Will exhales.
At the same time, he’s not sure he’d survive something like that. He’s already barely keeping it together, just looking at him.
“It was weird,” he echoes, faintly amused. “That people liked you?”
Will’s eyes flick to him just briefly, and Mike’s heart rate increases by one thousand percent. “You know what I mean.”

Mike nods solemnly. “This isn’t my first rodeo,” he says.
“No,” Will agrees, letting out a little laugh, “it’s – what, your third today?”
“Aw, you remembered,” Mike says, his hand coming up to rest on his chest, right over his heart.
“You’re hard to forget,” Will replies, and before Mike even has the opportunity to feel some type of way over that comment, Will continues, “or, more accurately — your guests are hard to forget.”
“Right,” Mike says quickly, not at all petulantly, because of course that’s what Will meant. That’s what they’re here for, after all — their guests. Not whatever sick satisfaction Mike gets from having to come in here every forty some-odd minutes, tail between his legs, to bother Will into doing his dirty work.
Mike has had a rollercoaster of a day. All he wants is a nap.
