The only person in the vicinity of where she was looking was Santos. Was this woman Santos’s mother? For her part, Santos looked like she was about to be run over by a train and she couldn’t do anything about it. Robby didn’t have to be close enough to hear the, “fuck,” that Santos said. He could see it.

Summary

Coincidentally, acting rhymes with nothing. Although Karina has been standing in front of the camera for years, keeping her eyes open and lips smiling throughout bright flashes, acting is nothing. Acting is nothing but a job, it’s just something she's good at— bragging rights and all that, but is nothing all the same. There is no passion, no drive to go beyond what's written in the script sent to her email, and no joy.
To Karina, acting is nothing.
Nothing.
But somehow, each time she meets that girl’s eyes, acting feels like everything. Acting feels like wanting to win a race, like making sure she scored the highest on every test, like acing every audition and coming on top.
