Summary
Jack Abbot is beyond exhausted when he finds a med student crying in the hallway. So far past dealing with the crying that he tries to convince the med student to a marriage of convenience just to stop the tears. The longer he thinks on it though, the more he realizes that marrying the little mouse, Dennis Whitaker, might actually make sense.
Robby is convinced Jack is having a mid life crisis. Or a nervous breakdown. Or petty revenge for his disappointment in Robby sleeping with Collins. Regardless, he doesn’t know how to help the med student Jack is marrying.
Dennis can’t keep doing this. He’s homeless, broke, and about to have to drop out of med school when he’s so close to finishing. If an ER attending is going to offer a guest room to crash in and covering the expenses of med school, he might just go ahead and marry him. He can always figure things out later, right?

“What do you want to do with him?” Jack Abbot’s voice filtered through to where Dennis was standing in the hallway. They’d planned this. Better to just get it over with. Dennis entered the room, their backs towards him. He got onto his knees by their feet.
“You can do what you like, I won’t argue.” His voice was quiet, scared. Both men snapped around at his words, eyes looking for him before finding him on the floor.
“Oh my god!” Jack gasped out, abject horror written across his face.Dennis Whitaker didn’t make the decision consciously. He’d been homeless for three weeks when it began. He’d been couch surfing, but after being turfed again he was stuck. Bouncing between shelters when he could, but often finding himself in doorways and underpasses. That’s how it began. In a red light district he never knew existed and $50 from a man with mean eyes. It spiralled from there.
Now living with Trinity Santos, Dennis had begun his residency, still he finds himself back there. A habit he can’t kick, the punishment he thinks he deserves. Dennis is trying to survive the war zone in his mind. What happens when his senior attendings realise the length he’s gone to in order to make it here?

'The older man laughed at his predicament. Then he did something terrible. He rolled up his sleeves for him. Dennis was damn near breathless when he got to the left hand. Jesus Christ, this will be a long day if Robby is already hovering and touching like this. He gets in moods where he likes to control what everyone does. Dennis is the one who bends to it the easiest, though, so he often bears the brunt. He didn’t even mind, which was probably the worst part.
When they walked out for the morning huddle, Trinity took one look at him and cackled. “My coat not good enough for ya? Or did you just wanna smell like daddy?” At least she had the decency to whisper it.
“Shut up. I should’ve never told you that.”'
Or in which Dennis has a rare condition that prevents him from feeling the physical sensation of pain. Jack and Robby have to find novel ways to punish him into taking better care of himself.

“Who the fuck did this?” Jack roared, his voice cracking like a whip through the ER.
Nurses froze. A tech stopped mid-step. Even Dana, fearless on her worst days, halted in her tracks.
Trinity stumbled under Dennis’s weight, panic flooding her features. “Fuck—Dr. Abbot…” she breathed.
Jack didn’t wait.
He closed the distance in two strides and grabbed Dennis, hands sliding to both sides of the kid’s waist, hauling him off Trinity and straight into his chest. Dennis sagged instantly, collapsing against Jack like his bones had given up.
Jack’s jaw clenched so tight the muscle jumped. His eyes were pure, murderous fire.
Or where student doctor Dennis Whitaker loses a 6 year old patients and comes back to the Er bloody and supported by Trinity Santos. His two attendings who have been trying to get the student into their bed for weeks now, dont really take it well.
