Summary
The only thing that makes life bearable for Light is the Kpop idol Beyond Birthday. Perhaps his closest remaining relationship is with his online nemesis, L, who loves Beyond too, but loves him all wrong. When L spontaneously shows up at his cupsleeve event, he finds his world begin to widen.

His mind and body are an ugly smear of artificial energy and authentic exhaustion, the caffeine he’s consumed still coursing through his bloodstream even as his limbs threaten to give out. He hasn’t slept well in at least two weeks, but the semester is almost done— his last set of final exams is tomorrow.
So is his birthday, actually, but that matters less.

“What’s happening?” Near asks.
“I’m not sure,” Mello says. “I think we might’ve been kidnapped.”
Near makes a soft sound of disapproval. Mello bristles at this, because it sounds like Near is mad at him over their abduction, even though it’s obviously not Mello’s fault. Shutting his eyes for a moment, he reminds himself that Near is probably feeling super-scared and vulnerable, and that, considering the situation, he may not be thinking through the potential implications of the sounds he’s making. He probably didn’t mean for it to seem accusatory.

A dire situation tests Mello and Near’s ability to work together, bringing out the good, the bad, and the intensely sexual.

The tile floor of the bathroom is freezing through the wool of her socks as Mello squeezes toothpaste onto the bristles of her brush. She always forgets how goddamn cold this place gets during the winter— old building, bad insulation. Shitty furnace, too. There are goosebumps all up and down her limbs. A tank and a pair of sweatpants might not have been the best thing to sleep in.
Then again, not all the goosebumps are from the chill, and her choice of attire is hardly the stupidest mistake she made last night.

Summary
She kept flirting with Near. Kept showing her the songs she was working on, sitting close to her on the couch to play her new melodies and try out her latest lyrics. Kept checking Near out in ways she knew weren’t subtle. It was little more than idle entertainment, initially— Near’s enthusiasm was endearing and encouraging, and it seemed sometimes like she might have a little crush on Mello— but it steadily developed into more.
And then Mello started pushing her luck. Putting her arm around Near’s thin little shoulders, leaning in to tease her gently. Doing Near’s eyeliner after she complimented Mello’s. Giving Near rides on the back of her motorcycle and stealing candy for her from gas stations. Thinking about Near when she wasn’t around, often, and not at all innocently. Before she realized it, Mello had stopped trying to pick up other girls altogether, even at the gigs Near didn’t go to. She just didn’t want them.
All she wanted was Matt’s girlfriend.

Summary
Back when they were at Wammy’s, the extent of Matt’s teasing included pestering him while he did homework, licking his neck and trying to bribe him with the promise of softness, something Mello would only accept in the comfort of their shared room—something he had only been able to find in Matt’s arms.
Now, at the ripe age of 19, Matt’s idea of teasing had taken a change for the worse and it included a lot more shirtless strutting (but an equal amount of pestering and neck licking).

Near’s laptop sits open on the desk before him, a PDF of his multivariate calculus textbook taking up the majority of the screen. Five minutes ago he was still pretending to make an actual effort to study, but now his eyes fix themselves unwaveringly on the little digital clock in the corner. One of the pixels there is dead.
It is 2:58 PM. Mello’s last class ends at 3:00. It usually takes him only ten or so minutes to make his way back to their shared room; the language building is relatively close to their dormitory.
Still, it’s too early for Near to begin their routine. He has to time things carefully.
