Dalam khazanah pewayangan Jawa, nama Durmagati tidaklah setenar para tokoh agung yang tercatat dalam kisah besar seperti Mahabharata. Ia bukan bagian dari lakon utama yang diwariskan dari kitab-kitab tua. Durmagati lahir dari tafsir para dalang, dari ruang-ruang cerita yang tumbuh di tanah Jawa sendiri. Ia digambarkan sebagai raja kecil, penguasa wilayah yang tidak besar namun cukup kuat untuk menanamkan pengaruhnya di antara para bangsawan dan pejabat yang lain.
Secara makna, namanya telah mengandung nasib yang dibawanya. “Dur” berarti keburukan, penyimpangan, atau jalan yang menyimpang dari keluhuran. Sedangkan “gati” atau “magati” bermakna arah hidup, perilaku, atau langkah yang ditempuh seseorang dalam menjalani takdirnya. Maka Durmagati dapat dimaknai sebagai seorang yang hidupnya berjalan di jalan yang keliru—bukan karena ia tidak mengetahui mana yang benar, melainkan karena ia dengan sadar memilih arah yang berbeda.
