A year after the escape of the Soviets, Jäger was captured by the Red Army and met Nikolay again in the Soviet Union POW camp. What he did not expect was that the war and illness had turned Nikolay Ivushkin into a entirely different person.

他快放弃的时候，德国人突然反手握住他的手，一字一字地慢慢写：不是我的。
“不是你的什么？”他脱口而出，问完了才想起来克劳斯听不到。
德国人写完了这句话：不是我的尼古拉。
尼古拉愣住了。在昏暗的灯光下，克劳斯·耶格尔缩在床边角落的毛毯下，固执地摇头，再摇头，眼眶和窗外的夜色一般漆黑。不是我的尼古拉。不是。
He was about to give up. But the German suddenly took his hand in a backhanded grip and wrote slowly, word by word: Not my.
"Not your what?" He blurted out before he recalled that Klaus could not hear him.
The German finished writing the words: Not my Nikolay.
Nikolay froze. In the dim light, Klaus Jäger cowered under a blanket in the corner of the bed, stubbornly shaking his head, again and again. His eyes were as dark as the night outside the window. Not my Nikolay. No.
