His family’s voices swirled around in his mind like a tempest as he found himself thinking about Ed, as he often did these days. He closed his eyes. How could Ed just give up everything, give up Blackbeard, for what – him? Just some silly little rich boy playing pretend. Stede didn’t deserve all of that. Or Ed, for that matter. He ruined everything he touched, unintentional or not.

“I should be the one apologizing to you,” Maes muttered, eyes stinging. He’d long since stopped letting his guilt control him, but he knew he would never truly forgive himself for not picking up that phone. “I’m… so sorry, Roy.”
